Default Auto or Manual

I am looking for a 740 for long term ownership. Which is likely to prove more reliable auto or manual?
Thanks

Depends on your personal choice and driving style. Auto will last longer if you change the fluid on a regular basis as there is not clutch plate then you won't have to replace that every 30 or so thousand miles. Manual picks up slightly quicker than auto, although I can out drive a manual 760 volvo with my auto version.

Autos are great as they lumber on so it's upto you. I'd always say give the auto a chance you might love it.

I agree with Charlotte - I don't think there is much in it if you look after them.

Autos need to have their fluid changed regularly to prevent heat from damaging the gearbox/pump, whereas the manual gearboxes need a clutch change every couple of years.

The M46 4 speed + overdrive box is fairly tough but takes a bit of getting used to - and the overdrive switch can be troublesome. Not sure if the M47 5 speed was fitted to the 740. If so, its as reliable as the M46 and is easier to use.

Replacement wise, the manual gearbox will be cheaper to get from a breakers yard. Economy wise, the autos are perhaps 1-2 mpg more thirsty than the equivalent manual version.
