Auto or Manual
I am looking for a 740 for long term ownership. Which is likely to prove more reliable auto or manual?
Thanks |

Auto or manual
Depends on your personal choice and driving style. Auto will last longer if you change the fluid on a regular basis as there is not clutch plate then you won't have to replace that every 30 or so thousand miles. Manual picks up slightly quicker than auto, although I can out drive a manual 760 volvo with my auto version.
Autos are great as they lumber on so it's upto you. I'd always say give the auto a chance you might love it. |

I agree with Charlotte - I don't think there is much in it if you look after them.
Autos need to have their fluid changed regularly to prevent heat from damaging the gearbox/pump, whereas the manual gearboxes need a clutch change every couple of years. The M46 4 speed + overdrive box is fairly tough but takes a bit of getting used to - and the overdrive switch can be troublesome. Not sure if the M47 5 speed was fitted to the 740. If so, its as reliable as the M46 and is easier to use. Replacement wise, the manual gearbox will be cheaper to get from a breakers yard. Economy wise, the autos are perhaps 1-2 mpg more thirsty than the equivalent manual version.
