Default MOT: Welding

Hi All,

As above today was MOT day, not much, a loose ball joint, a duff brake and reg light oh and both front floors near the seatbelt anchorage need plated.

To the welding and those who may be in a possition to advise, what would you suggest plate from inside the vehicle? or outside the vehicle (involving welding upside down)?

As ever any help is greatly received.

The MoT man will want it on the outside so they see it’s been seam welded. The best way to do it is to cut out the grout then make a template (cornflakes boxes are ideal for this) they cut a piece of metal to size and weld in. When I do this I leave the the weld obvious until after the MoT then grind it back so it’s neater once I have the ticket. That’s not essential but they do like to see a good weld for obvious reasons.

Is plating still permitted? I was under the impression that a corrosion repair now had to be a replacement section?

Well my MOT guy said plate so I'm guessing that should do the job. Keep in mind that floor sections arent normally available for mos cars, unlike the Lada project I'm working on with my brother where all the panels are available except the roof.

Playing is fine for the MoT as long as continuously welded. It’s not pretty though and letting in a piece of metal is both aesthetically pleasing and a better bet for long term survival of the surrounding area.

Hi All,

Lifted the carpets this morning, happily the floor is not as bad as I thought.

30 year old underlay and galvanized tinplate are in really good condition by the looks of it I'm the first to have been under there since it was build

That doesn’t bad at all, may get a bit worse once you start grinding/ cleaning it back but I don’t think there is anything major to concern you in those pics.
