I doubt my personal experience is an urban myth. I've worn tyres right down so that the reinforcement is showing on the inner side wall, but still plenty of tread, well above the legal limit. My commute did involve a lot of speed cushions. The tracking and alignment was fine.

I've been a Vehicle Engineer for a well known manufacturer for 35 years so I'm going to take some convincing that there wasn't some other factors influencing your tyre wear.

Well, I stopped straddling the speed cushions and never had the same problem since in the following 50k miles in that car, nor in subsequent vehicles.
