Okay then, worked out how to get the handle off.....so easy.....but all looks intact as does the clip it connects to. So now I'm thinking the cable has come adrift at the door latch ? Like I said in my first post it will open using the inside handle or is it something more sinister ? Please chip in with any thoughts guys or gals.....

I had a similar issue years ago on a BMW, then brand new. A small clip had broken leaving the whole cable, inner and outer sheath, to flop about inside the door. The inner could not slide as the outer was not being held in place. Sounds like your issue.

Pal of mine (not Dave!) had his Volvo fail its MOT as the driver's door wouldn’t open from the outside - a safety issue being the reason, so it’s not just an annoyance, apparently.

Well, I'll be in the door this weekend if the rain holds off as the garage is that full of crap I can't get in there !!
Will update here once I find the problem. In the meantime I'm using one of the wife's brollies with a crooked handle to open it from the rear door !!

Update......
Well....Still not done it due to various reasons, the most of which is I'm getting lazy in my old age !
But, for anyone interested here's a video of removing the door lock mechanism...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIZmJFqoDKk. Some interesting video's on the site volvosweden You Tube

Finally Fixed
Yep, it's fixed..............
Took it all apart last weekend and found the culprit...cable end snapped off. Got the cable in the week and fitted it this morning. A lot easier and quicker when you've done it before, even with the help of the video link in my last post. Part was 31253482. Number 1 in the picture......
