Latest update: had the passenger airbag out, nothing obviously loose there.... replaced, went for a drive, rattle still present!!!

I think I’ve run out of ideas.... any suggestions from anyone??

To summarise, rattle is from left of centre of dash (noisiest around left centre vent). Have driven car with vents removed, glovebox removed... still rattles. All screws and bolts I can see or feel have been checked.

One fed up Volvo owner

Does it rattle only when moving? Is it constant? Does it do it when stationery with engine idling? Does it increase/change with higher revs?

Only when moving and over bumps. Not related to engine speed or gear or road speed.... a pot hole at 5mph up to a cats eye at 70mph... smooth roads quiet

LOL... do you know, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something that random...

I’m now turning my attention to how the dash attaches to the bulkhead.... Haynes manual has just arrived so gives me some more pointers

I once had a Suzuki Kizashi that had an annoying rattle which sounded like it came from inside the dash. After months of chasing it around I found it to be the exterior plastic windscreen scuttle cover rattling on the windscreen which just amplified the sound. Cured with draft proofing foam strip to isolate it.

My wife has an XC60 with a dash rattle. She gives me grief about it. I thought it was going to be the thin insulated pipe that is running behind the centre console. If yours was the same then maybe it isn't that. In a generally quite car rattles are awful. Old Volvos never used to rattle like this.

Modern Volvos seem full of rattles after a year or so old. Our load covers rattles all the time. My older V70 has a clunk in the drivers seat like the weight sensor is loose and it clunks from one side the other going around fast corners.
The ones with Ford type rear suspension have the knocking rear bushes after 70K miles.

Well she has just turned 10 years old so shouldn’t complain too much about one rattle in an otherwise quiet car.... even the rear bushes are hanging in there at 90k.

Does 37 Ruby refer to the Austin 7 Ruby in your profile pic? I’ve got about three Austin 7 chassis in bits (including a 34 ruby)... bit simpler than volvos
