v70 Radio powers off after a few seconds
I have read any threads that I could find relating to this problem, but haven't got anywhere, it's driving me spare! So far I have spent £489 not getting this repaired!
Recently bought an ex-police 2010 V70. The audio system is the most basic, i.e. just a CD/Radio unit with amplifier built into the 'head unit'. The radio works for a few seconds when you switch it on, then stops. Simultaneously the the centre console screen goes blank. Took it to an independent Volvo specialist, he said Vida reported an "IAM fault". And that I should take the car to Volvo dealer for a service and software updates which would be free with the service, apparently the car needed many updates and this would be expensive to do via the indy. So I did what he said and as far as I can tell, no software updates were applied (not on the report sheet anyway) and they were unable to determine what was wrong with the radio. They claim "optical fibre fault" the dash will need dismantling and the fibre network diagnosing. So I thought sod it, and had a look myself. The 'fibre network' in my car is just one loop from the control panel to the radio, the pipe was trapped and had kinked but this seemed to be unrelated to the problem as it will pass audio fine. Nevertheless I replaced the fibre cable with a brand new one. No difference, I discovered that if I unplug the radio from the control panel the controls work indefinitely, so at least I can see the climate control stuff etc. But when the fibre is re-connected the radio works for between 10 seconds to about 1 minute then is disabled and prevents the screen from working. With ignition off, it is possible to get the radio to run forever (though I'm not sure what combination made that happen) either way as soon as the engine is started you only have a few seconds before the audio stops. I'm convinced this is a 'security' thing, there are actually no 'faults' as such, the radio (and console display) is just being shut down. But why couldn't Volvo identify that if that's the case? I can imagine a scenario where police buy a few cars, but the radios in a box together and then just put any old one into the car when it's time to move them on, that's just a theory. So what are my options? Anything else I can check myself? Cheers, Tom Last edited by chickenfizz; Sep 13th, 2018 at 21:18. Reason: Corrected "ICM fault" to "IAM" |
