04 V70 d5 auto...crank seal as it's leaking quite bad between the bellhousing and engine I know the seal is only £15 but it's the labour involved. Anybody know a decent garage that would do it that's trustworthy and reliable.

In the East Midlands, yes, but not in your neck of the woods, I'm afraid. Sorry!

When this happened to my old V70 I got several quotes. The best option I found was the local main dealer at £600.

The car was already 15 yrs old and had 220,000 miles on the clock but I figured that such major surgery was best entrusted to the experts.

The car did another 70,000 miles for me, and as far as I know is still going strong.

If it was a manual then a new clutch would make sense too.

Cheers

Jack

The mechanic I use is wary of doing it and really doesn't to, the local dealer (taggarts) are £750 but I've never had a dealer fix anything on anything I've had as they've all been older. I spoke to the guy I use yesterday and said I'd gladly pay him a bit more as I know and trust him.

Why doesn't your mechanic want to take the job on? Before throwing money at him, I would want to find out why. If he is unsure about his capabilities, you need to find someone else. If it is a lack of specialist tools - an engine lift for instance - by all means offer to hire one for him. But you need to find out why he is reluctant to take the job on. Personally I would steer clear of main dealers. they will not be familiar with 15 year old cars and will probably not know anymore than your local chappie.

There not a bad job just remember to disconnect steering column from rack before dropping subframe,

Need an engine bar across front wings to hold gearbox side of engine up and if its manual you might need clutch tools for pressure plate,

If its auto just watch the torque converter doesn't stick in flywheel on removal and if it does make sure its sat back in gearbox right before refitting, the two cut out fit into gearbox oil pump drive,

Oh and it won't be rear main oil seal thats leaking it will be plastic lug above that has now been modified into a metal lug and doesn't drop out with age
