P2 Headlamp glass removal
Happy New Year everyone.
Can some kind soul point me in the direction of a post that describes how to prise the headlamp glass free of the housing on a P2 v70? I've removed the clips but it seems sealed with stuff that's stuck like the proberbial to a blanket! I want to get my reflectors rechromed and then install LED running lights inside the main housing in place of the side lights ... Mo Ha Ha ... Searched long and hard but everyone just glosses over how the lens comes off! I'm using a spare set of headlights but I not keen on sacrificing any quite yet Last edited by YorkshireDave; Jan 4th, 2016 at 16:53. Reason: cant write properly... |

If the lens are glues together, you can use a hairdryer just to heat the glue to prize them apart. Ben |

There's a thread on here about rechroming. So far two suppliers have been found and it looks like both do a fantastic job. From what I recall, the one in Chertsey does both headlamps for about £75 and they are far better than new.

I tried to split mine one time and couldnt do it.
If I really wanted to - hell or high water I would put the lamp in the oven say 70deg C and try to soften the white resin. Maybe take a long strip of cloth soaked in acetone and wrap it around the glue line multiple times and keep soaked for a couple of days to see if it will soften |

Thanks D5. Think I might try a hot air gun played on the glass heating it up gently. Don't think the plastic will stand too much additional heat and I dont want a molten mass... ;-Q

I haven't tred this but i'd imagine if you could get a piece of piano wire inserted through the top and out the bottom of the bonding and a couple of handles attached you could slowly saw/slice your way through it, with a few little wedges inserted as you peel,,,, windscreen fitters have a saw wire but i think it's quite big.

Fork. A great idea and, in fact, I purchased such a thing for removing shower profiles that had been siliconed to walls basins too. Works really well.
Unfortunately, the glass appears to have a lip moulded into it that sits into a recess in the plastic! This means I cant even get a stanley knife blade down between them when its all cold and super sticky ;-( |
