I tried tightening mine ther other week - couldn't budge them in any direction.
Didn't have a torque wrench though ,jus ta big spanner with a bar on the end for added leverage, either they are well tight and I'm a weakling or they are stuck fast.

I would like to add one word of caution. I was tightening them the other week and before I got close to the correct torque it sheared resulting in a new CV joint as the garage couldn't get the old one out in less time than a new CV joint would cost. Anyway this resulted in £170 charge (I thought that was quite good for the work and a new CV joint). Our best guest is that they were over tightened in the past and started to shear then.
With the all powerful hindsight something felt strange when tightening them up, I was applying the same force and the bolt was still moving without tightening up. At this point I should have realised what was happening but as always hind sight is particularly powerful!

Hope this helps

A good warning, torque wrenches can go out of calibration really easily as well.
Mine has been twanging for the last 20k miles and apart from a bit of a clunk in car parks has caused me no hassle.

I reckon our obsession with the minor irritation is a tesimant to the build of the S60, you should try a MkIV Golf then you will know about wierd noises and rattles!

Not to get off track but we have one (mk IV golf) of those as well and Oh dear god is it awful, its heavy, slow (1.6<- it's a bad engine!), unreliable (53 reg, radiator had rusted through, new break discs ECU has hissy fits, oh and some unfound rattles/squeaks) anyway we're about to replace it and after my other half has been driving my '02 S60 2.4T SE she hates getting back into her golf.

Sorry to get off point, just had to voice the love of my S60 over a MkIV golf, desite being completely different classes of car.

I don't think you are the first, it was the warning that my local specialist gave me when I talked to them about it so I'm sure they've seen or done the same.

Remember they are only 8mm threads, easy to shear off especially as they have been threadlocked in. As you say, yours must have been damaged previously so perhaps, contrary to my last thread, new bolts are not a bad idea.

Torque wrench or no torque wrench, remember they are not wheel nuts!

Hi All,

I too have had this problem. It was sorted temporarily after the local independant re-tightened them. However, the problem is back. I'm happy enough to pay the £14.20+Vat for 30714142, but is that each or for the pair ?

They called them 'spacer sleeve'. Is this correct ?

Thanks,

Chris

Understand the part number is per bolt (incl rubber spacer) therefore you will a quantity of 2 pcs. Volvo AUS use the description 'spacer sleeve' - so will probabaly be the same.

Also understand that some people are a bit miffed at having to pay that much for a bolt & spacer. But it is one of the very few fixes that actually work and you don’t need to pay the garage for labour. As previously said – cheap fix in the scheme of things that drives you nuts.

Also, take note of others experiences. The metal adhesive fix has shown to come loose allowing the noise to return. Tightening and tightening the existing bolts sometimes only fixes the problem temporarily and can cause to breakage. My advice use a torque wrench for ALL bolts that you can’t afford to break or come loose.

Is this problem related to the bolts working loose, or wear on another item?

If you are asking about “the problem” being the noise – and the bolts contributing to the noise?
(i.e. axle ping or dull thud or knocking noise)

In a way, yes.
The bolts are there to limit the end-play or lateral movement or in the driveshaft to hub-spline interface.
They do this by applying pressure to the spline ring.
Both fixes…
- The metal adhesive [loctite] & existing bolt
- The XC90 bolts (with rubber spacer)
…do work and add some pressure to the spline.
The axle ping noise isn't radial looseness or ‘sloppy-ness’ in the splines, it's end-play in the joint, as the spline ring/driveshaft moves in and out.

It’s a matter of thermal cycles, temperature, physical forces, driving style OVER TIME which has an impact on how long the first fix lasts for. Loctite holds until it lets go, and the bolt will only apply a fixed amount of pressure before elongation (where over tightening exacerbates this).
The XC90 bolts provide a rubber cushion which provides a constant mechanical pressure to the driveshaft/spline which dampens and limits the movement.
The attached picture may help explain.
Hope this add some 'colour and light' to this annoying problem!
Cheers

Put the 2 new driveshaft bolts on last week and it's cured the knocking when you start and stop. However,i still had a clonking every now and then,so i've changed the bottom ball joints. Now the car is transformed.Tight steering and no clonks.Got the ball joints from the local car shop £20 for the pair, then local garage fitted them for £40.I'm well chuffed at that price, and i did'nt even get my hands dirty!
