If it cranks and fires for only a second, the favourite for this is the immobiliser. The most common fault is bad contacts at the immobiliser antenna ring that goes around the ignition barrel. Take the steering column cowl off and get to the plug contacts and clean them very thoroughly, this will probably sort the problem, of not then replace the antenna ring. It's not coded or anything, so just plug and play.

You could also try a different ignition key, in case there's something amiss with the embedded chip in the one you're using, but as above most common cause is bad antenna ring contacts.

Hi HB Volvo

What is SEW?

If lights are blinking (as though you had turned the hazard lights on), your alarm may be have been triggered.

If presumably you cant hear anything, the alarm siren might have been disabled.

Use the remote to lock and unlock the alarm, and see if anything changes.

I had this on one of mine last week. I don't usually use the remote, but on this occasion I had used it then I got into the car using only the key not the remote.

On other V70s that I have had, you can turn the alarm off by putting the key into the ignition, but on this car that didn't work and I had to set and unset using the remote before the car would start. I dont think it would even crank.

PS
Sometimes the clips on the antenna ring ( as mentioned by Luxobarge) break and the ring doesn't sit properly around the key.

And then it doesnt pick up the signal that it needs.

So have a look around there.

Default Will Noy Stay Running

Will not Stay running. Just to clarify, have not done anything as of thus morning. I removed the ECU and Transmission Mod to have more room to work on the car, the car will crank, start run for about 1 1/2 and then shuts off. The lights are on the cluster that are staying lit falshing arrow, check eng and service.

From the owners man: Transmissiom Mode "w" or gear position 3 or L engaged (automatic trans)
Had a problem with the shiftlock release and replaced the micro switch.

Thanks

PS the cars transmission was running fine when the work began. The engine ran well the PCV need to be replaced. Do not have extra key or key Fab.

+ 1 for it being an immobiliser related fault. Try cleaning the antenna ring contacts with some contact cleaner as per Luxobarge's recommendation.

Thanks for all the ifno did the ring and the car fired up. Once I drove the car for about ten minutes the Transmission light issue cleared up. Happy Volvo owner.
