It's a common fault but not much definitive answers to fix the problem.
I'll definitely be posting my results to when it's fixed.

The steering lock is not even locking so I'm thinking I've found the fault.
Going to have to fork out for an official Volvo diagnostic as my Delphi isn't picking up anything.

I never pay retail so what's the going rate of a Volvo steelership scan 50£?

Any more input is valued

Ita a common fault but no clear answers on any of the Volvo forums.
I'll be putting a description to how I fixed it when it's done !

The steering wheel lock is not even locking now, so I think I've narrowed the problem.
I think I need to get a proper Volvo steelership scan first as my Delphi system is not picking it up.

Any more input is welcomed.

Tried spare key
Kept keys away from each other
Tested key batteries

Hello There!
Was desperately looking on Volvo forums to find a solution for my Volvo c70 start problem with correlated message stating "turn steering try start again"
Then I came across your earlier post.

"THE FAULT:
Unlock the car as normal, try to start the car and the key fob doesn't make the "Zurrrppp" noise when placed into the key immobiliser hole. As soon as I dip the clutch and turn to position one or two, it states on the screen: "TURN STEERING TRY START AGAIN".
Nothing happeneds, then when I remove the key out of the hole there is no "ZURRRRP"sound either.
This is an intermittent fault that prevents the car from starting for hours/days.
It will randomly sort it self out and not happen again for a month or so.
This time I'm stuck and have to call the AA for recovery"

No jokes this is identically the problem i had for a couple of months now with my C70, the exact same thing, at first i managed to reset it by turning the steering, rotating the key etc, but now the car can not be started no matter what.

My question to you is what was your final solution to the problem?
Did you replace and program the Steering Column Lock assy with the stealership?

Any further info will be much appreciated!!!
thank you
Yakov

I've just got home from work and straight onto Google and found this thread.

My partner is having the same issue with her 2009 C30 2.0d. I think the problem has been a while in the making but has always sorted itself out previously and it hasn't happened for a good few months. However, this time the car isn't going to be going anywhere under its own steam I fear.

It is such a common fault when you search but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer on any forum, with many saying the first place to start would be the battery.

It's dark and raining now so this will have to wait until morning but has anyone had any success by replacing the battery? All the other electrics work i.e. lights, radio etc. could a weak battery just affect the steering lock in this way?

My 2009 V50 2.0d actually had the opposite issue recently where the steering wouldn't unlock and made the "Zurrrppp" over and over again. That sorted itself out by repeatedly putting the key in the ignition and taking it out whilst jiggling the wheel about. I'm now dreading something failing on this one too.

Exclamation Same Problem!

Did you manage to sort the problem with the steering lock? Was this the problem.

I now have the same problem with the same message on my V70 2.0D 2009. Car just won't start tried every suggestion on the forums. Called Volvo dealer today who said it could be the steering lock but wouldn't commit themselves until they did a scan. Called recovery who have no idea what the problem is.

It would be good to here from someone who solved this common problem. lots of suggestions what the problem could be but no real answer. Think this is gong to cost a lot of money if the main dealer gets hold of the car

Breakdown managed to bump start the car last Tuesday morning and we had it recovered whilst running on the back of the truck to ensure we didn't have any problems on the way to the garage.

The garage said it was a software issue and asked if we'd had a flat battery in the last few weeks, which we hadn't. The battery is the original (6 years old, nearly 100k miles) so I did think this may be the issue originally, however, both the breakdown guy and the garage said it was currently fine and would not be causing the issue.

They apparently fixed the issue with some reprogramming and the car was OK from Tuesday through to today (Monday) when we had a repeat of the issue, however, this time the steering lock is stuck on.

The car wasn't really used Wednesday and Thursday but ran with no issues all day Friday with a couple of trips to the shops, swimming lessons etc. Both Saturday and Sunday the car wasn't in use so something has happened between Friday afternoon and Monday morning.

Could the cold weather have affected the battery and caused a repeat of the issue i.e. software issue despite being told from two parties that it is fine? All other electrics work OK by the way.

I have had this problem with my 2010 V70 D5 for about a year. I have a keyless fob. I reckon the problem occurs about once a week. I tried the AA and they did not have a clue. The problem is with the steering column lock. Basically you have 2 choices.

Choice 1
A four figure bill from your local Stealership to replace the lock and 3 hours(!) to re-program it.

Choice 2
(i) Remove the Keyless fob.
(ii) Using your wheel nut, gently tap at the exposed metal square which is about 2 inches by 1 inch under the steering column. Eventually the lock will release.

Sometimes I can even manage to do it by tapping with my fingers.

Default Happened to me too... Give it a good whack

I've had the same problem. It happened a week ago as were levering to catch a flight (typical) but worked once I left the car alone for a couple of minutes. It happened again when we returned to collect the car, and this time it just wouldn't start. Note though, that the steering lock was not engaged, so I couldn't 'jog' it, as I had done a week earlier. (We tried for about 15-20 minutes without any luck.

The manager of the carpark and I then watched a YouTube video that showed taking the dash undersides and steering column plastics off to get to the steering lock. Unfortunately the video was using a C30, and their steering lock was attached by T20 screws... The one on my V50 is attached by an irremovable rivet-like bolt.

Fortunately, some other advice said to give the unit a good whack, and after a few good hits it started and got us home.

My local mechanic is going to see what he can find out from a Volvo specialist and some other research, and recommend a proper fix.
