How do you think that the addtional battery prevents harm/wear to the sart system?

of course , The support battery supplies the car's system when stopped to take the load off the main battery which will then do the restart . There have been no problems with the stop/start starter motor in the last 10 years since it was introduced .

The question was if/how it contributes to preventing wear to the starter.

well it will make sure there is more power available from the main battery for the restart .. The starter motor on Stop start cars is engineered more robustly too..

Hi all, as a new joiner to this excellent forum, I've read the extensive entries on the S/S topic, and I can add my own experiences.
My 68 plate V60 T5 (auto) (owned for 2 months) is completely unpredictable as to when S/S is going to function or not. At one point I thought it was the use of the sportkey that somehow disabled S/S, but subsequent tests disproved that. I don't have active bending lights, so that's not the cause. My journeys to date have been very mixed (between 5 miles to 150), but no correspondence between this and SS function. Like some others, I'm undecided as to whether it's important enough for me to follow up. I don't do large amounts of city driving, and the prospect of engaging with my local Volvo service (good though they are tbh) for something that's not vital doesn't thrill me. Any other suggestions always welcome though. (PS, car is very nice otherwise!) |

The engine does not auto-stop in the following cases: The car has not reached approx. 10 km/h (6 mph) after starting. After a number of repeated auto stops, speed must again exceed approx. 10 km/h (6 mph) before the next auto stop. The driver has unfastened the seatbelt. The capacity of the starter battery is below the minimum permissible level. The engine is not at normal operating temperature. The ambient temperature is under -5 °C (23 °F) or above approx. 30 °C (86 °F). the windscreen's electric heating is activated. The environment in the passenger compartment deviates from the set values. the car is reversed. The starter battery's temperature is below or above the permitted limit values. The driver makes sweeping steering wheel movements. The road is very steep. The bonnet is opened. When driving at high altitudes when the engine has not reached operating temperature. The ABS system has been activated. In the event of heavy braking (even without the ABS system having been activated). Many starts during a short period of time have activated the starter motor's thermal protection. The exhaust system's particulate filter is full5. A trailer is connected electrically to the cars electrical system. The gearbox is not at normal operating temperature. The gear selector is in M (±) position

Yes, read all those, and no discernible pattern or problem.
Most recent trip was last night, when SS worked on the journey from Warwick to Loughborough (50 miles or so), but NOT on the way back, later the same evening! |

Just noticed one of the SS conditions above that I had missed earlier..... "the driver makes sweeping steering wheel movements". Any idea what this actually means? And any speculation as to why it causes SS to stop working?
