Default 06 S40 Tow Bar Wiring

Hello there,

I recently bought a tow bar for my 2006 1.8 petrol s40, I have fitted the tow bar and routed the cable into my boot. The tow bar comes with a 7pin 12N plug on a cable, and instructions on how to splice the into the current wiring in at the rear of the car. I have no problems doing this from a skill point of view but after reading a few things hear and there about over loading circuits and warning lights on the dash. I thought I better look into it in more detail. I looked into my Haynes manual to see what was what and stumbled across the wiring diagrams for the car. And in the back where the diagrams are, it has two separate diagrams for a 7pin trailer socket and a 13pin trailer socket. Looking at the 7 pin socket, the final earth comes from the supposed socket to E9 (earth terminal on right hand side of luggage compartment). So I went back in my boot and pulled it all apart looking for these sockets, but sadly I cannot seem to find them. Surely if there is a socket ready made with the car, this would be the best way to do it. So sorry for the long winded way of getting here, my question is, does anyone know if is a 7pin trailer socket already in the car from standard and if so where abouts may it be? If not, any advice on how to proceed further would also be great. Also I realise there has been previous threads on this subject but none are clear on the age of the car in question and none ask about these wiring diagrams.

Thank you for your time

There are connecting blocks behind the R/H side boot trim. I was lucky when I bought my towbar for my V50, as it came with Plug/Play electrics. (Right Connections. Part No 19260511 RC ) might be worth a search for instructions.
Hopefully uploaded screenshot.

Whatever you do, don't just splice into the tail lamps as these cars monitor the bulb's current and the CEM (Central Electronics Module) doesn't like extra bulbs.

There are two ways you can do it.
1) Get the Volvo trailer module. It's easy to fit using the connectors already in the boot. You need to get a Volvo specialist to then update the software then your trailer will work properly including the warning light in the dash.

2) Get a 'bypass relay'. These take a signal from your lamps (negligible current so don't upset the CEM) and use it to switch the trailer. You'll need to find 12v in the boot to power the thing and there's no way it can make use of the warning light in the dash. Most of them have a horrible bleeper to get round this. No software changes are required.

The choice is yours. The Volvo module is the most satisfactory, the bypass relay is cheaper.

Hope this helps

Ian.

Thumbs up

Thank you both for your replies, I have ordered the dedicated wiring kit. I’m not one to cut corners. This has been very helpful, thanks again
