Talking Volvo XC90 - creaking noise when turning Left!!

Hi there all,

I have a 4 year old Volvo XC90 D5 SE and I have had a strange problem for the past couple of months.

When braking and turning left at about 20mph and above there is a creaking noise coming from the front drivers side wheel well. It only happens when I turn left and only happens when I brake and turn, turning without braking does not generate the noise.

I have had it into a Volvo dealer twice and it stopped for a few days but has started again.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Have you tried bouncing that corner of the car hard to see if you can replicate the noise?

Can be:
Shock creaking
Bush(es)
Ball joint...

Cheers for that but noise only happens whilst driving. I have even had a Volvo tech in the car so he could hear and he is flummoxed!!

I have had a similar problem (I think).

It turns out that the brake dust and other grim is blocking the calipers and the pads are not returning as they should - they are sticking on the discs.

I had them stripped and cleaned/greased and it has been OK since.

It took ages to figure out what it was as it seems like a creaking noise not a brake binding type noise. I had it on both wheels and like yours it only happened at slow speeds e.g. turning into/out of the drive. Normal driving was fine. I originally thought it was steering related but when I was stationary and turned lock-lock I heard nothing.

It can be (almost) be prevented by using ceramic discs which don't generate this dust.

Hope this helps.

Default creaking noise! me 2

Hi,
i have had the same problem,

mine has come from the off side running board(side steps)

only fitted them a few weeks ago and the noise is like a creaking noise when driving slow and turning.

check and tighten up the running boards if you have them fitted.

regards ian

Default creaking noise when turning left

i had the same problem and after changing absorbers, brakes , finally they changed the gearbox because they told me that there was a kind of freedom inside the gearbox conserning the left axis and his connection in the gearbox. This happened when i had about 50000 km. Now everything is ok.
