Yes an excellent idea , new sleeve and lubricated by the special grease which is now advised . ( when new there was no grease added )
If it was mine i would loctite the sleeve to the angle gear and use the grease on the gearbox spline end . It will be more difficult to remove the angle gear in the futureas you will have to pull it about an inch further out before it drops down but should give a long lasting result .

Thanks Clan
Your technical knowledge is first class, i've seen your shadow appear in other technical areas. At least i know the process of elimination for repair. I take you work for Volvo or you are an independant specialist?

I've had my late 2004 XC70 for a couple of years and have long been suspicious that it had no awd. I finally bit the bullet and took it in to my local dealer who confirmed that they had the Volvo puller tool to remove the sleeve. They had the car for two days and failed to remove the sleeve - they told me that they broke the tool trying to get the bit off! They had to use the "service kit" that comes with the new sleeve (seals etc) to reassemble the car and it cost me £320 for a no fix. The service manager advised that the next option was to remove the gearbox (500 +VAT) to see if that would help. What does the panel advise I do?

Just had my '53 D5 MOT'd by my indie.
Good news - it passed without difficulty. Bad news - I now own a 2-wheel drive car apparently! Just in time for the bad weather - marvellous! My indie, who doesn't normally resort to inflated prices, quoted £1200, including the angle gear at £750. He said it looks like a design fault, and from this forum it is clear it is not an isolated problem. He's had about 15 cars with the same problem this year. It is a crying shame that Volvo won't take responsibility for the design problem and cough up for the repairs isn't it. Perhaps someone with a legal bent could take this up with the consumer association. "Does the panel think the quote I received sounds reasonable? |

The quote is on par . But you dont know if you will need an angle gear unit until it is taken out , you may get away with just the sleeve ( £80 ) being changed , if the angle gear splines are just servicable.
I'd locktite the sleeve to the angle gear splines , but leave the gearbox splines free but greased with the special volvo grease .

newbie`s first post
Hi all, also just discovered that my AWD is a front only drive 4x4? have had the vehicle on the ramp over christmas and if i turn the prop the front wheels only turn, so this indicates that the splines / gears are ok. Problem is is the sensor or the pump at fault? no fault codes present no warning on the dash! that`s pretty poor diagnostics from volvo not what i expected from a prestige vehicle. Can anyone help in detecting which is at fault.

No AWD
My 2005 XC90 was recently giving me issues in the recent snow. Took it into local dealer, they drove it and confirmed the AWD not functioning, but the diagnostics showed no faults. On further investigation it appears the Angle gear needs to be replaced at a costs of £1200.00, but the wonderful peeps at Volvo Customer care have agreed to pay 90% of the costs to replace, so my faith in Volvo has been restored. This may be due to fact I have owned vehicle from new and full service history at Volvo dealers, it may be different story if you bought it second hand.
Hope all you guys with similar problems get things sorted out too. |

I have noticed an almighty thunk and front spin when I have been pulling off from standstill with the wheels on full lock in the snow recently- Does this mean my AWD is screwed too? Is there a definitive driving test I can do to check, without getting the car on the ramps?

I also had my 4 wheel drive fixed about a month ago ('03 XC90). First I heard of it was during a service with a Volvo main dealer, and they were quoting something ridiculous to fix it (of the order of £3000 I think). They said as long as the bevel gear assembly wasn't leaking it would be fine as 2wd. I had the car looked at again by another dealer after hearing rumour of the first using dirty tricks to get servicing done when it wasn't required. Second dealer confirmed problem but said they could fix it with the new sleave for about £800 ish.
I sat on it for 5 months or so, but one of the reasons I bought the car was for the 4wd. (To be honest I thought AWD meant permanent 4wd) I decided to bite the bullet and have the work done with an independent, with the plan to just replace the sleave (about £300 at his rates). However, once the sleave was off, he advised that the bevel gear (or the driving gear - the one inside the sleave) too was worn and that a sleave replacement would probably not last long (OK for an immediate sale, but not best option if planning to keep car) - he advised replacing the whole box (£1200), so I went with that. He kept all the old parts to show me the wear on both parts - the sleave was almost smooth, and there was considerable wear on the drive gear too. Car much better now - no wheelspin, and it may be imagination, but it seems to accelerate from standstill much better now. We have to join a busy dual carriageway daily from a very short sliproad, uphill, and it was quite a hairy event before - much better now. Also, had lots of fun in the snow! Its obviously very disappointing to find such a part has such a high failure rate, and that Volvo appear to be disinterested in the majority of cases. I have some other more minor issues with the car too, and although I plan to keep the XC90, I can't honestly think of it as a premium brand car anymore. |
