Volvo 480 Gear Change

I am experiencing problems changing down into 2nd gear on my 480.

1st-2nd, 2nd-3rd, 3rd-4th etc... all fine and changing down 5th-4th, 4th-3rd are fine, it's just when I try and go from 3rd-2nd that I really struggle and often have to double de-clutch.

Anyone any thoughts on this please ??

Any help would be greatly appreciated as changing the gear oil etc... isn't the easiest of jobs and if it doesn't help in any way !!!

Linkage sounds like it MAY need adjusting but start with putting EP80 oil in.

Ignore the need for the Volvo Special Oil,it is not needed at all.

My Turbo box was fine for tens of thousands of miles with normal EP80 in it.The only reason they charge so much is because it has Lubegard additive in it.

Yes, I suppose I should start with the oil really, the car has been "stood" for 4 years.

I just thought poor gearbox oil would affect all gears going up and down, but it's an easier and cheaper place to start.

hi there

My dads 440 has quite a stiff gear change esp for 1st and reverse...

The gearbox fluid has not been changed yet but I was thinking of adjusting the clutch cable and the gearbox linkage... Ive heard from some 480 guys that 400s tend to stretch their clutch cables so fully pressing the cluthc doesnt actually fully open the cluthc hence you get tough gear changes...

The only prob is, haynes note there are two types of bracket that hold the clutch cable on... but there are no pics to help identify which is which!

what would you advise, fluid change first then adjust clutch and gear linkage?

Yes!

Definately fluid change first.

It made an instant noticeable difference on my 1992 Turbo.

I've changed the oil and although the old stuff was pretty ropey it hasn't helped with the gear changing, I think I'll have a fiddle with the clutch cable next as this problem tends to be intermittent.

hi!

as this car is front wheel drive there are two adjustments, the clutch cable and the gear linkage adjustment. The latter is because the whole engine gearbox diff setup is mounted on a subframe that moves whenever as you put the engine under load etc so therefore the gear lever has an adjustment too and isnt fixed. Haynes details how to check and adjust both of these but I havent given it a go yet......
