Temp Gauge
Hi John
Is the thermostat opening correctly ? Also there should be a plug linked to the thermostat housing somewhere which sends the signal back to the temp gauge in the car, see if this is dirty. It's very common especially to have oil on it, once that's cleaned see if the gauge then works if not check for breaks in the wires and/or the fuse on the back of the speedo head. Charlotte |

Hi John
In addition to previous post. Beg or borrow a haynes manual or go to local library (or if sneaky have a quick look in the copy in halfords). Find the temp sensor (i think its on or near the thermostat but can't be sure as i have a diesel). Pull off the connector and with ignition on connect the wire to earth (engine block) via a test bulb. If you don't have a test bulb make one up using a 5watt bulb and a couple of lengths of wire. The only reason for the bulb is to prevent any possible damage should you have the wrong connection and find its live to battery. With the temp sensor wire connected to earth the guage should go all the way up into the red. If it does the sensor is faulty which is quite common and they are easy to change, just do it with engine cold. If the guage doesn't move and the fuel guage is OK (they share the same supply) then suspect a broken wire or faulty guage. I would say in this case a manual would be useful to allow you to trace the wire. If i remember when i get home i'll see if i can attach a section of the wiring diagram. dave |
