Default Hood-liner foam

Hi all

This is with regards to the foam-like material beneath the hood. Not sure what's the proper name, but has anyone cleaned it? Would it be damaged if I sprayed it with water?

Reason I'm asking is that a few of the clips are broken and I'm intending to replace these clips. So I thought why don't I give a go at cleaning it?

I found this videos showing how he cleaned it with great results. Though I don't think I'll go all the way by spraying black dye on it.

Any thoughts?

It’s sound deadening material and I have washed mine in the past using the jet wash (at a distance) with out any issues. It does get heavy when wet though.

Thanks! I'm thinking of getting it off the hood (since I will replace all the clips) to spray it with water.

Did it looked decent and better looking after you jet washed it?

Pressure sprayers can damage the material with too much pressure

Spray it with a soapy water from a hand sprayer and then work it in the detergent gently with a gentle brush

Another spray with a hand sprayer and clean water, and then mop up the surface with a sponge, rinsing frequently in clean water

At all times keep the engine covered (with eg an old bedsheet) to prevent dirty water from getting into the engine bay

You'll be surprised at how much grime comes off.

I've cleaned them in the past with a small steam cleaner...

That’s why I used it at a distance and also mine is the lowest pressure one that you can buy.
I was also cleaning the engine bay at the same time.

Default Job Done

Cleaning completed.

Before cleaning

Cleaned the sound deadening material. Took 2 days for it to be fully dried. A bit worried after cleaning it when wet the material lost its stiffness and was like a piece of cloth. There was dead bugs on the hood side of the material.

The backside of the material didn't look as durable as the front.

Cleaned the hood the best I could, new clips and the material back in place!
