Good luck with it. Even if it costs you a bit to sort out you've still got a car you will enjoy driving for not a great deal of money.

My experience with replacing lamp assemblies on the 940 is that the cheap, front indicator/side lamp units that you can buy on eBay new for about £15 each including delivery are pretty good and last well. Original OEM units are likely to have deteriorated, especially the glued edges which will mean they are no longer watertight, and aren’t a good secondhand buy.

For rear lamp units I’d generally pay for new Volvo units unless on a really tight budget as the electrical connections on some of the pattern parts are a bit Heath Robinsonesque.

Cross-reference the part number - it's the only way.

Now, what are the part numbers on the ones you have? If they match then yes, they will. If not, it's a reasonably fair bet they probably will but Volvo were playing with sidelight/indicator lamps a lot around 1988-1994 so while it may look right, it still might not fit.

The good thing is, the seller is Euro Car Parts - they will take things back without quibble and if you're close enough, you could take it back in person, preferably with the car and they could identify the correct units for it.

Intriguing. I swapped out the set of clear front indicators on the Valdez (1997 LPT) for a set of early (92?) orange units without difficulty, hence my previous post on this topic in the thread. The 960 units ARE different, but so are their front wings and headlamps.

700-series lamps I know less than nothing about as far as compatibility is concerned, though rear lamp assemblies appear to be interchangeable between 700- and 900-series cars, againb as performed on the Valdez; there is a step in the bottom of the earlier units but they have a pre-fitted rear fog lamp in the near-side assembly whereas you'll need to perform plastic surgery to get a nearside one on a clear-lamped OEM unit.

I discovered all this from the opposite end of the spectrum - 1988 740s and a 760, all borderline facelift and/or having slightly different lamps to each other. The 760 is the facelift and shares some lamps with the Mk1 960 and some switchgear too. Also shares some parts like the indicator stalk with cruise control on it with the Mk2 960 - work that one out!

Like i said, Volvo seemed to mix'n'match as the mood took them, doesn't help us 20-30 years on trying to find replacements for what has failed though!

I forgot that the 960 was facelifted and that the early models (Mark 1) had similar lamps to the 940; the only 960 around here is a late saloon.

I might have missed it ... but is this car a 940 saloon/estate, or a 960, and what year/engine? Got a pic of the whole car and under bonnet? Bob
