Is that super-late 760?

1. Hazard switch on dash
2. Clock adjustment button on dash
3. Headlight switch 9/10.30/12 o clock (rather than 11/12/1 o clock for 940s)
4. 940-esque speedo (newer font) but with odd speeds missing

I'm a geek, I know!

Cheers

Depends what you call "super-late" really! It's a 1988 facelift model, one of the first facelift 760s i think.

Like i've said on many threads on many subjects, Volvo seemed to fit what they had as and when the mood took them! That said, the owners handbook depicts exactly what i've got so they obviously made enough like mine to make it worth printing the book!

Also unusal on the early facelift 760s, the headlamps have the fog and drioving lamps built in but the fog lamp is uppermost in the cluster with the driving lamp at the bottom - opposite to the later 940 although i've seen one (it was on ebay recently for Ł4995, probably still is!) with 940 headlamps fitted. You can see what i mean in this shot :

I've upgraded the fog and driving lamp bulbs to HID (35W) and the main/dip bulb in the outer to a proper H4 LED bulb that gives a superb beam pattern and much better light output. It now has clear front indicators and side repeaters too, next job in that department is clear/red rear lights but they've just disappeared from ebay - doubtless they'll reappear after Brexit!

Everyone loves a part bin special! 🤣
My 960 was registered Dec 96 but came with a 1997 handbook. It’s all intents and purposes a V90, i think but as it’s a 2.5 manual, still badged as 960.

Strange that your 760 has the fogs on top - never seen that before!
For lols in my 940 I fittted 90/100 H4s and 100W H3s for the spots. It was like a war time searchlight with everything on! 🤣

Cheers

Correct me if i'm wrong, but a dec 96 car would be 97MY so a 1997 handbook would be right?

I think with the first facelift 760s, they were trying things out which later found their way onto the 940 and also facelift 740, certain things look very similar to later models (as you also pointed out) and my guess is that with the 760 selling fewer units than the 740, Volvo decided to see what bits the victims - err, customers even, liked and use them on the 940 which was really their "bread and butter" model, the one most people bought and provided Volvo with their bread and butter!

Ford used to do similar in the 70s, they'd alter the trim or wheels on a particular model but only on one trim level and see if the customers liked it, if so it gradually became standard across the range.

Remember the Mk1 Escort 1300E?

That was, i believe, the first model available with the then new, Purple Velvet Metallic pain aka "Cadburys Purple". So many people ordered their new 1300E with that colour that it became a popular colour across the range and on other models as well.

Apologies, The Mk 1 Escort was released 22 years before I was born!

Cheers!

Well in that case!

I did a search fro Escort 1300E and the first photos were all Purple Velvet!

Quite a good performer for their day as well, kerb weight about 770kg but with 72bhp - similar power to weight ratio to a 2.3 940LPT. But they were rust-prone, my dad had a new Capri in 1972 and by 1973 the front wings had almost rotted through!

I've always thought of them as a triumph of marketing over matter or the "thinking mans Escort GT".

In the early 70s, insurance companies went berserk loading premiums on cars with "S", "GT", "TC" and similar because a few silly people had been overcome by the extra power from a "hot" model.
All of a sudden, manufacturers were dropping these badges in favour of things like "E", "Ghia" and so on and marketing them as a higher end model. Becuase of that, it didn't attract the "boy racers" of the day as it was an "Executive" car, not just a hotted up version of dads family car.

The Escort 1300E was basically a GT with improved trim (and some wood veneer glued to the dash ) and normal seats cover in Dralon instead of bucket seats. The Mk3 Cortina GT made way for the 2000E i a similar way, the Granada GT became the Ghia etc.

The insurance companies didn't tumble to this trick and rated them just a little higher than their stable mates instead of 2-3 groups higher which made a big difference back then, with only 6 main insurance groups.

That meant you got all the performance of a GT but without the insurance pain and you had a nicer interior as a bonus!

Result!
