Grinding noise when braking

Hello All. Hoping someone can help with this one. Really hoping it's nothing to worry about, however... Every now and then when I apply the brakes on my XC90 semi automatic, (tends to be when lightly applied-I think) I hear what seems to be a grinding / crunching noise. Does anyone know if this is normal or an issue that needs resolving. Having never had an automatic / semi, I have no experience to draw upon. Any help from you guys would be most appreciated. Also, can anyone recommend a good volvo indie garage for service etc around the LS23 area? Really hoping someone can advise me on this braking sound. Could be just "normal",but really need to know.

No it's not normal. Most likely to be worn brake pads, get them checked ...

Will do. If need replaced, what ball park figure should I be looking at. Just looking at a rough idea?

You can probably pick up genuine Volvo pads for around £40 and aftermarket pads for £20-30.
Add on £40 ish for a regular garage to fit although it is pretty simple DIY with the right tools.
The garage will probably also say you need discs, regardless of whether you do or not.

Just to bump up the price? Is it best to replace both together or pads then discs if and when needed?

TBH, its not wise to replace the disks and reuse worn pads, as they will have worn to the old disk profile, and that will ultimately just cause problems with the news disks .... upshot ... if you change the disks also change the pads regardless.

Pads first if discs are ok, if not replace pads and discs ...

Have just done the discs and pads on mine using Mintex from ebay - discs were about £70 delivered and pads about £35.

You cannot beat genuine Volvo, but the pads are circa £65 and the discs around £150. Had it not been the week after Christmas I would have used them...

it is normal to get a little noise the first time you apply the brakes after the car has been parked overnight and it's wet - this is light corrosion on the discs but this should go away after the first or second use. If it continues you should get them checked asap as it is likely you have reduced braking performance.

Just got some Textar front pads off ECP for £38 delivered with the discount codes and extra 5% through quidco, which is pretty good as they are the supplier for Volvo.

What I didn't know was that Textar is owned by TMD Friction who are a Nisshinbo Group company that own the other well known brake brands Mintex, Pagid, Don, Textar, Cobreq, dynotherm and cosid so it looks like there's probably a good chance that they're all made in the same place and spec.

Thanks to all for the advice. Going to take the plunge and give it a go. Sorry for this, but A few more questions.. I'm going to replace discs and pads. Do I do this all round? What tools do I need? Anyone have a good link to a "how to guide"? Really want to give it a go myself. Can't believe there's so many people out there giving their time to reply / advise. Many thanks for this! J
