This sale has nothing to do with me, but looks like a nice car.

Slagging off PSA engines is commonplace but I wouldn't believe any of it, reality is each individual car is different. PSA make a great many more engines than Volvo so it stands to reason you may hear of more failures but the % failure in comparison is likely to be negligible. All 2.0D's built before 2008 should be DPF free in V50's which takes out 1 common moan off the bat, the parts are cheaper and more readily available in comparison to a D5, the 2.0D is significantly better on fuel than the D5, the engine is smaller and much easier to work on than the D5, in fact the only real negative (putting perceived reliability and unreliability aside for now) is the 2.0D has shorter service intervals which is annoying if you are a high mileage user.

Ford Powershift gearboxes are much like VAG DSG boxes in that when they work they make a conventional auto box look slurry and incapable but when they go wrong the only fix is a new gearbox as nobody does separate new mechatronics units for them. The AW TF80-SC auto box in the D5 is hardly known as being fault free either however and it is worth noting the Geartronic cars are restricted to 350nm torque due to the gearbox so go for the manual for the full 400nm and remap potential although if it's power you want, get a T5.

Another issue with the D5 for me is the refinement, it's a noisy engine all of the time; whereas the 2.0D does fade into the background at higher speeds, the D5 continues to make its presence known.

It is of course, personal preference, but from my experience of 6 PSA diesels myself and countless others I know of, have seen and driven, I would argue they are no less reliable than a D5. My D5 was a horrifically faulty car but I accept that happens and I wouldn't say to anyone don't buy a D5, just don't discount the PSA engines as being no good, they are the best selling diesel engines on the planet and that doesn't happen by accident!

Again thanks for taking the time out with these replys! Right ok, its all given me alot of food for thought. I wasnt aware the ford engines were HDI used by Peugoet, my inlaws own a peugoet franchise dealer so it may be worth me asking them the ins and outs but a 100k+ Peugoet engine scares the c*ap out of me! Not sure its in the same bracket but i had a 1.4HDI and it was a super problematic engine. May of just been unlucky! Abit concerned about the engine noise from the D5 after the replys. Going to have to go take a test drive i think!
