As a driver of a twenty-five year-old Torslanda I'm so pleased I don't have these problems. Indicator/dip-switch stalk on the left, front and rear wipers on the right, both within fingertip reach, and even after all these years working positively and easily. I know when it's getting dark or foggy and I switch on the lights - nice neat rotary switch on the dashboard - and when it rains I switch on the wipers, intermittent, slow, fast or single sweep. None of the switches has illumination. I just wonder what the point is of all this automation and illumination except to build obsolescence into the car.

Oh dear, I do feel old!

fairly obvious reason to mention them - you lknow where they are and they dont need to be illuminated for you to find them - exactly the same reason that the stalks aren't illuminated

Had illuminated stalks on a mid-80s Mini Metro, but not had them since on any vehicle I've owned.

Years back I had a 1985 MG Metro which had illuminated stalks. There were fibre optic filaments that went from a bulb somewhere around the switch mechanism and ran up inside the stalks to the translucent markings towards the end. Evidently the forward-thinking innovative designers at BL were just too far ahead of the curve .

Edit: what he said

a colleague of mine had an MG Maestro that he put into a field upside down. He swears blind that while he was trying to climb out of the window the high-tech dashboard started up"Warning - oil pressure low!"
Mighty cars, those 80's BLs...

I showed him the setting on their demonstrator (had not got my car at that point) : My Car -> Wipers -> Rain Sensor Memory

Now they are permanently in Auto mode
