I completely agree with the dangers of using a mobile phone in the car (my Windows Phone switches automatically to Drive mode and sends an SMS to anyone who calls or texts me when I am in the car), but I think you're missing many of the benefits of having a satnav, even on a journey you know well. Having an estimate of your arrival time, receiving traffic information updates so you can re-route if necessary, finding a service station on the way or a car park near your destination ... these are just some examples of the things which a satnav can help you with.

I would like to see this clairified as well. I use a sat nav a great deal but I have not seen mention of this. I assume this comes under the heading of okay as long as not a distraction rather than the out and out no no of a phone but assuming can be a dangerous thing.

So what's the score using built in sat nav ? Also using built in phone ? Is this illegal too now ?
What's the difference between talking to someone on a handsfree and a passenger ? Is a passenger more distracting? Can you eat, smoke, adjust the heating, put on sunglasses etc etc. Using a phone to call and text in your hand is one thing but this........ If you can't touch a handsfree phone is this the death knoll for Parrot and the like ?

The individual in point was selecting locations whilst moving - apparently looking for a garage. That was the offense not using the satnav, the reasons given by the police were that you should programme the satnav before you start moving and not whilst you are moving.
This would be consistent across inbuilt satnavs whether touch or not.

I'm with the majority as it stands so far.
If I'm going on a journey where I need my sat-nav, I program my destination into it and let it do its thing before I head off down the road. If I need to change anything en route, I'll stop in a lay by (or similar) switch off the engine and do what needs doing. My phone? It stays in my pocket when I'm driving so that I'm not even going to think to look who/what it might be. And, slightly different, I'm oh so glad that I don't have one of these new-fangled 'info screens' on my dash to distract me. In my mind, some of them seems nearly as dangerous as having a lap-top computer balanced on the dash. Just my basic instrument panel does all I need when I'm driving. There are more than enough distractions occurring outside the the car to keep my eyes and mind busy concentrating on driving. I won't even smoke while I'm driving (not that I have kids in the car at my age!). If I need a cough and a drag, a lay by or the services is the place for that. Also that stops the inside of the car smelling like a dirty pub ashtray (for those who remember those days!).

The above is a reply to the statement and should not be regarded as a personal reply to the poster. Jon. N.B in addition, I am lucky in that I often have laon cars from manufacturers: recently XC90/V90/S90, FPace...so am familiar with inbuilt sat navs - do not assume I am a technophobe. E.g I worked with IT when many of you were in nappies. Last edited by Prufrock; Mar 2nd, 2017 at 10:23. Reason: addition |

A lot of forces won't even look at phones for minor accidents. It costs a lot of money to do, normally serious and fatal accidents only. The phone records can be requested without the phone anyway. I never once examined a phone at the scene of an accident when I was in the job and they would only be seized for serious and fatal accidents. |

It wasn't obvious at all, you didn't say that or even hint at it.
All you had to say was "if you're involved in a serious accident" and the meaning you wished to convey would have been perfectly clear for only one extra word. Hardly War and Peace! |
