My next trip will be end of June coming back end of July same route doing the overnight run. That means the return leg will be in p&o's new ship. Looking forward to that.

I find it a nice relaxing crossing after a 6 hour drive down to Portsmouth. A nice chilled out 61/2 hours cruise. New ship looks good from what I have seen on website.

Thanks for the responses. Very helpful. I better peal off the UJ on the roofbox and keep the saltire on!

I have driven in a lot of European countries but always hire cars through work. So never really needed to think of anything else. Pick up car, drop off car and that's it. This is my first trip abroad taking my own motor. I know about the French authorities can be rather zealous with foreign motors, especially British ones.

On another note, I have made sure my car insurance for my recent Volvo purchase has european cover. Next on my list is European breakdown cover. Was looking at the AA for that? Anyone had experience with them on a foreign trip?

Edit to add. Sailing from Plymouth to Roscoff.

Thanks

My Volvo has xenons. So... deflectors not needed for them?

The police attitude to Brits is fine so long as you play by the rules, have your docs to hand and don't start a fight. I've been pulled a couple of times for speeding only to be sent on my way with a warning.

I think AA, RAC, green flag all much of a muchness. Basically just an extra insurance.

It's a family holiday so don't intend to treat their roads like a work trip on the Autobahn... Wife would tell me off otherwise!

The trip is 5 months away but just want to make sure I am not caught out. I did read some of the other links, and right enough, a breathalyser!

Mine too, ABL, active bending lights. According to the handbook they have flat beams so no adjustment is necessary. But on a recent thread if I'm correct someone had imported a UK car to France and had to change their Xenons to comply with regulations. My choice is to stick a pair on and hope they leave me alone rather than try to explain the handbook to Monsieur Gendarme. Maybe worrying unnecessarily but anything for a peaceful life.

Probably a good shout as you say. One less thing to draw their attention.

I have not used beam deflectors on any of my three Volvo’s - have never been flashed by oncoming vehicles.
