Angry 244 Running Problems, Backfiring

Hi I'm having some probs with my 1975 244 2.1 fitted with the Stromberg 175 CD carb.

When you lift off, the car sometimes backfires and it generally idles roughly.

The ignition side of things are all new and adjusted correctly.

I have removed, stripped and cleaned the carb.

Has anyone else suffered this and can anyone give any pointers

Thanks in advance.

You say you've stripped and rebuilt the carbs did you use new diaphrams ? also are the plugs correctly gapped ? and in good condition.

Also have you made sure the float chamber is correctly filled up with oil ? and the idle speed is set correctly ?

There's no air leaks on the Carb's mounting?

I presume that when you mean the float chamber, the piston at the top yeah? - I filled it with ATF to about 5mm below the cylinder and then shoved the piston back in. I didn't replace the diaphram though.(It didn't appear split) - I dont fully understand the theory of working behind this carb with the piston etc. as it is totally different to what I have been used to with more modern carbs. I know the plugs are new but I dont know if the previous owner gapped them properly, I'll check 2morrow.

The float chamber is at the bottom of the carb. - The bottom-most part. It meters fuel

As for the damper, I believe the oil level should be 18mm. to take the level, unscrew and remove the damper piston then place it in the hole it just came out of with no pressure to force it down. the clearance between the lip of the hole and the bottom of the screwtop should be 18mm.
