Unhappy A gentle whirring noise.

Hello all.

This noise relates to a 1990 240 GLT Auto Estate.

It increases in frequency and volume as the car picks up speed.

It starts at about 20 mph and is most prominent at 35 mph.

If asked to pinpoint the source it would be around the oil filter/manifold area.

Any ideas?

Default whirring noise?

Just guessing here, but I've had some strange noises that come from the piece of metal that fits over the exhaust manifold. It's meant to be a sort of heat baffle I think, and it can vibrate causing funny noises. Mine just sort of rattles now and then and as it's a bit rusty with the bolts that held it being 'rust-welded' into place, I'm just living with it until I replace the manifold. I might replace the car first though.

I hope that's of help.

On my 1992 estate I found that the metal pipe leading from the manifold to the radiator (a cold start device for sub zero temps) made all sorts of awful noises - I nearly drove my wife mad - "whats that noise?" - "that a new noise, what is it?" and so on - restricting its movements with cable ties only partly solved the problem. Made no noise when stationary - only when under way. Got rid of it eventualy! Might be worth checking.

Forgot to mention - the same pipe on my saloon makes no noise at all so I guess its the luck of the draw!!!!

The pipe described by Velorum2003 is normally attached (it was on mine anyway) by an aluminium pipe as he describes, to the plate I mentioned. Perhaps they are interacting in some way.

Hi and thanks for your help.

I can safely say that the plate attached to the exhaust is not creating the noise, I removed it, it made no difference.

I have since had a local mechanic take the car for a spin and he seems confident that the wheel bearing needs replacing.

I hope he is right, he will carry out the work this Wednesday.

Thanks again for you help much appreciated

Default Strange noise

Hi the noise you are referring to is possibly the fan to be exact it's the viscous coupling on the fan, it's inherent with Volvos. I wouldn't be worried. Is your fan the metal version or the plastic one ? it's also a mixture of the alternator blades.
