Talking A Whirring groan!!!??

Hi All, A question for you all. I have 245 estate, fuel injection 2.3. Occasionally I get a whirring groany noise coming from the passenger side rear wheel area. It doesn't seem to increase or decrease in volume with the engine, just constant droan. It appears to coming from just in front of the rear wheel. I've been told that it could be the main fuel pump! Could this be right and if not does anyone have any other ideas?

It is quite possible it is the pump - try listening to it with the engine running from outside - the pump is located just in front of rear wheel. It could also be a wheel bearing but will not be there when stationary.

AS the noise does not increase.decrease with speed then I would discount the rear wheel bearing. However if the lifter pump in the tant does nor run then the Main HP pump does make a noise. This may explain the intermittent nature of your noise. Sometimes the pump starts and sometimes it does not. To test this disconnect the in tank pump at the connector inside the car 6 inch form the inspection cover, link fuses 4 and 6 together ans listen to the HP pump. Is this your Noise. ??? Regards Peter
