aircon cycling.
i tried my aircon yesterday and when sat with the engine idling it keeps cycling the compressor on and of at about 30s intervals. when the weather was colder i didnt notice this when i tested it upon buying it. is it broken or can i just get it recharged? how much should a recharge cost?

RE: aircon cycling.
It sounds like you're low on gas.
A recharge will cost ~£100 but will only help assuming there's no leak. The 850's aircon system is a bit of weak point - do a search on "evaporator". You might want to brace yourself! |

RE: aircon cycling.
i now its supposed to cycle a little bit but not this much. the guy who previously owned it hardly used the aircon apparently, i wonder why, hmm. anyway in 2000 he had a uv dye put in, so if i can find a uv torch it should show any leaks.

RE: aircon cycling.
The A/C will cycle quite regularly to prevent the evaporator from freezing. 30s cycles does sound a little too frequent but it could well be the case. Why not just call your 'friendly' local dealer and ask them over the phone. They're usually quite obliging, especially if you speak to their actual technical guys and not the service advisers.

RE: aircon cycling.
Andy,
Great British Ripoff is absolutely right. You can buy a 1 kilo can of R34 to re-charge your system including the pipes and adaptors etc. in Walmart for £2.20 thats 2 pounds and 20 pence! Cypher, have a look through your local yellow pages or Autotrader, you should get your system checked, vacced out and recharged for about £60 if it needs it. However, the cycling you refer to will probably be caused by the cooler outside ambient temperature at the moment which makes the pressures in the system drop, not necessarily due to shortage of refrigerant. If you leave the car ticking over for a while so that underbonnet temps are high, then switch on the A/C, it may not cycle as much. Don't forget, you should run your A/C at least once a week for about 5 minutes as the carbon seal in the compressor will begin to leak otherwise. Chris |
