oil leak
my recently acquired D5 XC90 is leaking oil down the back of the engine. I've been underneath and taken the tray off, but all I can confirm is that it's appearing somewhere up there above where it's possible to see. Any obvious or common culprits to look for? I'm not familiar with this engine, so apologies if it's a bozo question.

Earlier models prone to leaking core plug they were rubber and can push out with undue crank presdure. (Engines with black plastic cover- pre 2006 163 bhp) , search the forum for this.
Or could be crank seal. But these are worst case and not a cheap fix (engine out). These will give oil seepage from the flywheel housing. Have a closer look preferably with the car on a ramp. If just the back of engine, could be oil in the turbo that may be cheaper to sort. Hope this helps Last edited by john langrick; Jul 18th, 2020 at 13:56. |

car is a 56 plate. core plugs? Leak would be coolant surely? And it's not the crank seal unless it's taking a very unusual route.
Turbo oil seals sound feasible though. How does one actually get to see the turbo and oil connections? |

Hi, sounds indeed turbo related . Mine is earlier model so perhaps someone with experience of later model can advise. I assume your rocker box cover is grey?

There is a core plug behind the flywheel in the oil gallery

there may well be, but I can't see how that would be producing oil down the back of the engine.
Is it possible to actually access the turbo without removing the engine? I can see the heatshield from above, but nothing from underneath, it looks nightmarish... |

Yes, it is possible to remove turbo but since there is a angle gear it is a tricky job.

Can this angle or bevel (I assume they're the same thing?) gearbox be removed without having to start disconnecting the engine or subframe so as to give access to the bottom of the turbo? I don't want to take the engine out just looking for an oil leak.... |
