Hi, 1970 144 B20 automatic

I've temporarily misplaced my keys.... Well I've misplaced them for months now.... :-(

So no door or ignition keys.... The doors are all locked

Do you know I can't recall but I assume no steering lock.... That's something

How to get in.... And how to get it started

Help!!

I think your car may well be fitted with a steering lock, Kevin. I seem to recall that all four of my 1 series cars were so equipped. Reference to the book of Haynes, which covers cars built from 1966 to 1974, chapter 11, paragraph 22, details replacing the steering wheel lock. It does not say that earlier cars were not so fitted, so I assume that it was standard fitment from introduction.

I am greatly impressed that replacement keys are still available from Volvo as 'grumpydad' indicates. At least they should not cost anything like the amount that I was quoted recently for replacements for my present 2000 V70!

Regards, John.

PS I've a feeling that your car will also have 'quarter' lights. These were never really secure on my cars, and may allow a means of access with minimal damage. The catch was glued to the glass and the bond regularly failed through, I assume, the effects of sunlight.

John.

Get a key who will go in into the driver side barrel.
From the letter box
From another old Volvo

Wiggle and shake, 90% of all old PV Amazon 140 and 164 I could open this way.
Not very safe this kind a locks. The steering column one is a different game
There is no easy way without destroying to open the trunk
The triangle windows at the front of the doors are hard to find
A bag to open the window and get access to the door locker is easy too
Good luck, Kay

Hey thanks

Yes quarter lights.... Something you never see anymore....I must look at mine and see if they're locked

You know I really can't remember about a strong lock

It's automatic so has a column gear selector

I remember accidently locking my 2005 V70 by pressing on the remote as I was getting out and left the keys on the bit in front of the speedo ..I shut the door and the car locked and armed..... Though it's got a sunroof and it was open!! It wasn't a pretty site me trying to get in

Has anyone seen idea where I can get a bunch of 2nd hand keys to try??

Hello again, Kevin,

If one of your 'quarter' lights is not locked that would indeed be a bonus. I wasn't suggesting that you should damage one in gaining access, only that they are a weak point on these cars and a light tap may be enough to break the bond if it is not already broken. I lost count of the number of times that I re-glued mine back in the day.

The fact that the car's security is not up to modern standards works in your favour in this instance. If I remember correctly, the lock buttons resemble a golfing tee? If so, another trick that you might try is to procure a length of light duty banding of the type used to secure parcels - the flexible plastic sort, about 1cm wide. Fold this over and work the closed end between the window and frame and over the button; pull back and tug gently upwards - hopefully the button will release. I always carried a length in my tool-box for use in emergencies, and made sure I used a 'Krooklok' or similar device when leaving the car unattended in case someone else did so for nefarious reasons!

I can't help with the keys unfortunately, but is there someone local to you who might be able to assist? 'mocambique-amazone' makes a good point; if the lock and / or key is worn, which is likely to be the case after 50 years, his suggestion could very well succeed. I'm not quite sure what he means by 'a bag to open the window', though, but perhaps I am missing something in translation?

Regards, John.

Auto locksmith will be able to cut a key to suit the barrel...…..it'll probably take minutes!

What about one of those thin strips of metal with a slot on the end, 2 ft long ish, that one sees "professional" naughty people using? Slid down between window an seal then pulled up, how do they work?
