I hear the PP compressor in mine every time I start the car in the morning. It runs for 10-15 seconds then shuts off.

I pointed this out at the last service and was told "no fault found".

Can't say I've noticed any reduction in engine response when pulling away, but it does make me think there may be a slow leak.

Yes it does, this is normal. Sorry my post was a little vague, I wanted to say the PP compressor running for a prolonged period, but I couldn't really think for how long! I just know I noted mine was more noticeable, for example I was hearing it once the car had pulled forwards and stopped for family to get in, by which point when functioning correctly it would normally have stopped.

I have never heard my PP pump running in 3 years of ownership, I have often wondered if it actually works as other XC90's I have driven are far quicker than mine off the mark, I asked my dealer to check it out at the last service and they say it is all ok, I have my doubts about it really working.
Plus I have not had a broken PP pipe yet. Mmm. (Sad state of affairs when you worry about something not working because it has not broken yet)

None of my family, including myself, have ever heard mine either. It is fitted with the Polestar upgrade and does actually go like a scalded cat with a trailing wind when required. No lag either. Only too much soot around the tailpipe for my liking, and compared to the surgical cleanliness of my Honda's tailpipe even inside the tube and silencer. I suspect a gap between the DPF element and its housing, because it shouldn't be like this if my other vehicles are anything to go by. No visible smoke haze though, even when looking back at night into following car lights.

I reckon I've got a slight leak around the DPF, but it can't be significant or the pressure differential sensors each side of it would surely cause a fault code

However, it could be that it is a tiny leak or that the ECU only reports large pressure differences, and not insufficient differentials. Either way, it is enough soot to coat the inside of the exhaust and leave a deposit on the chrome fake tailpipe surrounds, but nothing visible in the [invisible] exhaust plume.

Hmm, shouldn't be any soot at all, how odd.

I can see into the exhaust pipe of the Honda right into the silencer and it all looks as clean as the day it was fabricated.

I'm not concerned about the soot on the Volvo's tailpipe region, only surprised at the contrast. The Nissan is also clean but the Ford Ranger is more like the Volvo, with noticeable but not extreme soot deposit.

Have to agree and I'm starting to think that mine is actually getting worse as it ages (although it's only done ~12,000 miles).

I've just come back from Geneva where I had a Mini Cooper All-4 (diesel, auto). The BMW engine (I assume?) was so refined that it was hard to tell it was a diesel.

On the other hand, the interior, especially the dash, was a disaster zone.
