Default Replacment rear calipers?

Hi, new member to the forums despite owning a V70 D5 P2 for a few years now. Been watching from the wings for a while and found the post very informative. I've done a search for a resolution to my current problem with binding rear brake and seems like I've a few more checks to do despite being largely convinced that it stems from a problematic caliper.

Just changed the rear pads & discs for genuine Volvo - dealer gave me 25% so costs became comparable with aftermarket parts - as found the NSR to be dragging & overheating and pads were thin anyway (98K on originals). Had to replace the handbrake shoes & springs at the same time due to delamination of the friction surfaces (used Pagid from ECP after reading web comments on Volvo originals and they were £10 cheaper). Was definitely the pads that were binding as evidenced by the amount of brake dust evident on the affected wheel.

Just been for a 5 mile run and problems is still there on the same side so now leaning towards replacment of caliper.

Question is about replacement calipers. Volvo dealer wants £175 each for a recon exchange, ECP do recon exchange for £126 each, Nordic do new replacement (mfr not specified) for £100 and PFV do new replacement (mfr not specified) for £78. Should I be wary of the Nordic / PFV replacement units as they seem to be too much of a bargin? Has anyone any experience of using these suppliers / parts?

Any comments much appreciated.

Hi...I'm still undecided about which way to go with this (and having serious trouble with the locking wheel nuts now as well, just my luck, the key is playing up - waiting on a call back from a Dynomec removal user) no comments about Nordic or PFV?

Thanks, Longhouse

Hi Mike

That's EXACTLY what I'm going to do. Had a problem may years ago with a Vaxhall Cavalier and locking wheel nuts where the dealer had lost the key but denied it. Resorted to a couple of old sockets, an impact wrench and lump hammer but not trying that with the Volvo!

More trouble than they're worth!

Just hoping someone can guide me with the caliper question.

Thanks, Longhouse

Thanks Peter, I'll look into that and probably overhaul the caliper I take off and put it into temporary storage. Think I might purchase a new caliper from either PFV or Nordic to get me going in the meantime.

If anyone in the Manchester / Warrington / Liverpool area has probems with locking wheel nuts I can recommend TMCar (07983 396824 or 01925 245172, also has a web site and does vehical transportation) - he'll come to you if necessary. Great guy who doesn't give up easily!

The calliper is quite easy to overhall 1 hour will see if cleaned, seal changed, piston back in, assuming it is not corroded, new dust cover and bled, and up and running. If you intend to do this then treat the belled nipples with plus gas a week before to ease releasing the nipple. Regards Peter

I've installed a PFV caliper when my rear wheel locked on, had no issues since. Looking for a seal refreb kit so I can do the rest.

I had a problem with a locking wheel nut last year. I was in rural France at the time and got the local garage to remove the offending nut. He had to drill then burn then grind the head off the nut. Took him 45 mins!

I contacted the manufacturer McGard in Germany (who supply Volvo) and told them I thought the design was faulty as the locking nuts didn't have floating collars like the non-locking ones. They told me the old style had been superceded by ones with floating collars and offered to send me a new set gratis! Wouldn't pay for out-of-pocket expense though, as they say they would normally supply proper tools in that situation. Worth a try.

By the way, I'm having a similar problem with a rear caliper.
