Default Indoor Swimming Pool

Hi All

A couple of weeks ago I had cause to slam on the brakes and ended up getting a foot bath for my left foot, plus a small puddle on the driver mat. I did the same again with the same result. Kept driving and rocked the steering wheel sharply from left to right and I could hear water sloshing around.

It sounded like it was behind the steering column, and nothing to report on the passenger side.

Fast forward 2 weeks and now no sloshing water noises nor foot baths.

Seems like the accumulation resulted from the downpours a few weeks back and the dry weather since has given the reservoir a chance to slowly drain? I haven’t seen any puddles under the car so can’t confirm.

Assume though this is more likely to be a drain blocked so water can”t get out, rather than a leak and water getting in where it shouldn’t?

Anyone had similar or any suggestions?

Car is 2006….163hp diesel automatic version.

Firstly make sure the scuttle panel under the from windscreen is clear of debris and that any water can drain freely. Clean out any muck that is there.
If you see a lot of muck, it may be worth removing the wiper arms, and remove the scuttle panel to access and clean the area.

Had exactly this on a Renault Scenic a few weeks back, both drains, one each side, were completely blocked and water gathered so high that it flowed into the vehicle through the cabin air intake. Had to remove wiper arms, scuttle panel, and both wiper motors to access the drains!

Also remove the cabin air filter and inspect if it has become damaged from water ingress. If so, replace it. (Accessible under the glove box, torx screwdriver required)

Then lift the carpet, especially on the side of the vehicle with the amplifier (on LHD drive vehicles the amp is under the right hand side front seat), and check if underneath the carpet is dry. If any signs of water exist, dry everything thoroughly. Leave carpets up for a few days, and make sure you soak up everything you can with an old towel first.

The stereo amplifier and the gyro sensor sit in a cavity in the lowest part of the floor, if water gets in then they will get wet and eventually corrode and fail.

Update, and not a good one.

Took the car to my local garage and advised that the sloshing sound has disappeared so presumably the water had either drained or evaporated, but asked them in any case to see if they could find any issues with water ingress.

Cue call from garage advising that there are countless warning lights and error messages and it's not looking good.

They got a hose on it to try to find the leak but looks like they have drowned half the electronics.

They want to strip out the seats and carpets and dry out the various components then see where we land.

I'm really not happy at all as this sounds like it might be curtains. What really irked me was the suggestion that the car had a load of warning lights when I dropped it off, which it categorically did not (other than for a parking sensor which has been there for a couple of months).

Is it possible to find out date and time an error code was logged?

Thoughts, advice etc much appreciated.

Not available on early 2000 models but on a 2006, I would imagine the fault code Timeline function in Vida is available and will show a date and time for all codes logged since the last code clear.

Also, given your model year, water ingress around the the CEM is a high possibility and would explain multiple codes given it's the Central Electronic Module.

Do we think a good dry out will see it come back to normal?

Possibly but if CEM water ingress is the problem, it will just keep returning.
It's a known potential issue and Volvo had a fix for it so at least look into the possibility so it can be confirmed or eliminated as the source.

How would we know if it's the problem or not? I ask as the garage is using a SnapOn reader and not the Volvo one.
