Anything over 3 years for a battery and you’re doing well. My car is just 3 years old and has the issue as previously stated.

And remember the other parameters that the StopStart system monitors:
Ambient air temperature Engine temperature Engine RPM Total vehicle electrical load Speed Braking Indicating And propably some more as well... ie: the StopStart function only works under nominal normal operating conditions. Any operating extremes (extreme ambient temperature, engine load, electrical drain, etc) will prevent StopStart from working, as the engine needs to stay running in these situations.

If the stop start is not operating, you can go in to the menu on the car, while the car is running, and in to Stop / Start, (can't remember the exact path) and it will tell you why the stop start isn't working.
Most common for me is "battery charging", as my car sits idle for 5 days at a time. It usually takes more than the weekend for the battery to charge, so my car usually doesn't have stop/start for months at a time. Last edited by Rocinante; Jul 6th, 2018 at 08:18. |

Having now owned my car for a while ten days, I've discovered that it's the aircon running that's causing the stop/start to be unavailable. Oddly however, once the stop/start becomes available then the aircon can be turned back on without the stop/start becoming unavailable.

There are a whole bunch of parameters which impact the system working:
Engine at correct running temp Exterior temp mustn’t be too high - or too low Battery charge state must be above a certain % (on the Mondeo it’s 74%) Heated front screen must be off DPF doing a regen will deactivate the system until it’s finished Also, the system won’t do more than a number of starts in a given period of time - so that the starter motor doesn’t overhead Hope this helps |

Basically, if you have an automatic, you simply keep your foot on the brake pedal when the stop start activates and stops the engine. The car is still in drive. When you are ready to go again taking your fott of the brake will usually start the engine. If not applying slight gas will restart the engine. Alternatively when the car engine stops as in the example above you can put the car into park instead of leaving you foot on the brake. When you move the bearstick back into drive the engine should restart. You may want ot do this at night as volvo brake lights are going to annoy the sh it out of the person behind.
One word of caution, if the engine stops , say when you are parking it on your drive way and you think ok i will leave it there, you have to press the stop/ start ignition button otherwise the car engine could start again. So press the button to start the car and before you leave the car. The reason for the stop start not working can be a whole multitude of things, and you can find this out by selecting ecodrive in sensus and then progessing through the menu until it shows the reason. If you have a lot of short journeys the car will need a run to charge the second battery. There was a tranche of batteries that were faulty. Your dealer should know if your car is among the affected ones by the vin number.
