As far as I know the correct procedure is to have the gearbox hot after a reasonable drive, parked on level ground, leave the engine running and go through each gear position for 5 seconds before putting in "P' and then measure (with the engine running)

Hello John. You having problems with your Autobox? It seems they are prone to go faulty, and not work properly if the Gear Box Oil is past its best.

As noted the dipstick for the 5-spd (AW 55-50/51) is in the front of the engine compartment, low on the right side, viewed from front.

If this the 6-spd transmission (TF-80SC), then it does not have a dipstick.

the 6 speed auto does not have a dipstick
There is a integrated level plug Torx 40 at the back of the box near the drive shafts, there is also a filler at the top of the box.
The level must be taken when the oil temp is at 50 oC so it needs to be hooked up to the volvo dice/VIDA to do this,if it reaches 60 oC its to hot and needs to cool down to 50 oC.
