D24 turbo options
I've just bought a 245 D24 with "oil-in-the-water". I haven't opened the head to see if it has cracks in it, but I would like to ask you about what are the possible solutions for interchanging a D24.
I mean I can: a. service the engine b. put a VW LT engine into it but is it possible, to use a VW TD engine? or an intercooled one in this car? I mean not buy serious modding, but just by putting a new engine into the place of the older one. (dumb question): Is the turbocharger on the cylinder-head? By changing only the head is it possible to make it a full turbo or I need to do something else? I don't know what is the best place to ask, but since there are no D24T topics in the 200 series I wrote it here. |

RE: D24 turbo options
This question should have been sent to the 200 series section. The reason for the lack of topics is that there are very few D24T engined 240s in circulation. Most of them are D24 or Nissan or Perkins or Mercedes engined replacements. If there is room for it a D24T engine has the turbo mounted on the exhaust manifold feeding up to the inlet plenum chamber by a straight pipe. I think that the alternator is mounted low down on the same side which further restricts the room available. Possibly mounting the alternator on the head like 700/900 series would give clearance. It would be much more difficult to fit a D24TIC engine due to the size of the intercooler. However I can point you in the right direction if you wish to pursue this action. The main problem in fitting a turbo on the 200 series is the lack of room between the manifold and the steering column in the engine bay.
Have a look on e-Bay for a D24 Green Book manual, or purchase one from a Volvo dealer for £30 (part number V97000164). All the best, Peter. |

RE: D24 turbo options
Volvo never offered the 240 with a D24T engine as that was reserved for the 760 but I am sure in theory it would fit. Peter points to the main issue, though, with RHD 240s as the turbo and the steering column interferes. This was why Volvo never offered the 240 Turbo on RHD markets nor the B204FT.
