Default What's this then ?

Hi All,

I'm afraid the 850 has just failed the MOT and Volvo are quoted over 1000 pounds to get it through !!

You won't be surprised to hear that I'm trying to source parts a little more cheaply. The problem is that I need, amongst other things, to replace the NSF Drop Link (it's worn). It seems that parts suppliers don't call it that so I'd be grateful if anyone knew of it by another term, or even better had any recommendations about where to get one !

Many thanks,

Simon.

One drop link costs £10 from "German, Swedish & French" retail car parts supplier. Go here https://secure.gsfcarparts.com/shop/secure.asp?Try=Yes

Part number V42282.

It will take about an hour ALL-IN to fit. Also try Eurocarparts.co.uk. I'm sure others will post up links too.

What other things did it fail on?
That drop link is probably the anti roll bar link rod as detailed above.

Thanks for the replies - I'll be ordering this afternoon !.

These are the MOT failures, with the Volvo main dealer quote:

NSF Drop Link Worn £85.77
OSF Brake Hose Twisted and Seized £135.94
Front brake pads £115.20
Steering Rack (leaking fluid) £753.23
Two new front tyres

Ouch.

On top of that they point out that the antifreeze is weak and the brake fluid is dirty ...

The good news is that already I've seen a recon Steering Rack for 145 pounds exchange - a bit cheaper than the parts only price of 450 pounds that Volvo quoted.

Interestingly the service people say they would be quite happy to fit any parts I supply, and they explain that it's only because they are 'tied' to Volvo that they must charge those high prices.

Anyway, thanks again for the replies.

I replaced my own steering rack in 8 hours with the use of a pit too! It was a job and a half. Pads are easy if you have a 7mm box hex piece or allan key. Dunno how your hoses are twisted, but if they're seized that could be fun getting them off and a bleed too which is needed anyhow. This car has been neglected and you're bearing the brunt of the service costs now. If you got it for a decent price which reflected the work needed done then it will be worth it.

That's what I'm telling myself ;-)

I'm getting the work done by a local garage who I've known a good while and I think you've convinced me that this is better than tackling it myself.

In all I'll have spent 600 pounds more that I hoped, which I guess means that effectively it cost 2600 pounds rather than 2000, which is not so bad.

Mind you, I think the clutch will need doing sooner rather than later :-(

Oh well, it's only money ...

>NSF Drop Link Worn £85.77

<£20 from Eurocarparts.com (ECP)

>OSF Brake Hose Twisted and Seized £135.94

Full set of steel braded hoses about £40 from ECP. Difficult to change as Volvo flexi hoses seize solid to the ridgid pipe.

>Front brake pads £115.20

About £20 from ECP and easy to change.

>Steering Rack (leaking fluid) £753.23

About £150 for a recon rack and difficult to change

>Two new front tyres

www.mytyres.co.uk and get a mate to fit them. Or visit your local tyre dealer.

If I was being cynical, these seem to have become the latest version of your washer fluid needs topping up.

Of course, they 'might' actually need doing.

Do you constantly need to top up the power steering?
The reason I ask is because a bit of fluid around the gaiters isnt a fail according to the guy who tests my car. He says it has to be dripping when the wheel is turned from side to side.
Some fluid was noticed around the gaiter on my car but this is probably due to a few drips leaking when the steering is at full lock.
