Default Psssst sound from underneath rear when idling

Sorry to put this in the general forum, but no one replied in the S60 forum and I though that since more people read this forum i might catch someone with some more knowledge on the are (also, it might be the same on other models)

I just got my new S60 2.0T yesterday and very pleased with it. Although i noticed a "psst..pssts" sound coming from underneath the rear of the car when at idle. I noticed this before i bought the car and asked the sales guy to get the technicians to look at it. They said it was the turbo letting off steam.

It's not the exhaust as i would have seen/heard it. It sounds like air flowing out of a little hole. It's not a repeated pattern either, its entirely random..psst....pssssst....pst.................... .ppst.psst...(hope that makes sense

Are the technicians right? I didn't think the wastegate would open when idling?

Cheers

You must be creating a whole load of boost at idle...

Think I'd disregard that diagnosis as a "we're late for tea break" off the cuff remark.

If it's coming from the rear, I'd go for something related to the fuel system. Pump or tank pressurisation type of thing.

Any form of active suspension on those cars?

Hi,

Was that "turbo letting of steam" a technical term??!! Hmmm...

Won't be thew turbo. Not at idle..

The only thing I can thing that may be making noise would be your AirCon or Climate Control...
Can this be turned off to test??

It's got STC (stability and traction control).

The noise is not audible when standing up. I have to put my head under the rear to hear it.

Hi,

I've attached a sound clip so you can hear what it sounds like. It seems like coming from behind the right rear wheel....

Listen to it here:

I also turned off air con and STC but it made no difference.

Hi,

Is your filler cap on the right side of the car by any chance?
May be pressure in the fuel tank or an issue with the fuel system or return line..

I think they all make that noise.
When I first got my T5 I enquired about it at its first service. I vaguely recall being told it was the fuel system so it's probably something to do with the pump.
Nothing to worry about as my S60 is six years old now and still sounds the same. I guess you can call it a Volvo characteristic.

That comment really eased my mind....I just purchased the car two days ago and i've been trying to find out what it was to make sure i hadn't bought a "turkey"!! The tecchies from the 2nd hand dealer said "its the turbo, don't worry"....but i don't always trust those guys!

I still bought it because of its immaculate condition, price and full volvo service history with all receipts, mot's etc. The car has been in france for 2 years so the service sheets from the french dealer i cannot interpret but the fact that the owner has left all receipts, serviced it on time etc is a very good sign..And the dealer had great modern, proffesional looking offices, 3 service halls, kids play area, free drinks!! Beats some of the other S60's i went to see.....1 had no stamps or receipts for 3 years and the sales guy had a fag in his hand when talking to me in his "office". he said "it could be that they forgot to stamp it". The key rubber around the ignition key was extreamly worn and they car had 50k on the clock. Something was not right. ..i'm rambling now...i'll stop.

Thanks for your answers.
