960 Probs!!
Hi, Can anyone tell me if a speedo that only goes up to 100km then as time goes on goes down to about 80 even if speed stays same or goes up !! And Why did Volvo try 3 different cam belts on the 960 !! Were the early ones (21mm) a problem ??
Got a few more?? but start with these,, Still think Volvos are the best , Cheers Bateye,( Chris) |

Hi,
Welcome to the forums and enjoy your stay here.. Speedo: Maybe a faulty sensor, which is in the diff unit. Make be faulty cable connecting the sensor to the clock. This same cable/sensor is used for the ABS so does your ABS light light up? Do you have ABS? May also be a faulty clock.... Didn't know there were 3 cambelts so hopefully someone else can chip in with an answer.. Des. . .

Hello.
Speedo: Tried to bang the top of the dash? Some 7/900 instrument clusters have bad soldering points that gets intermittent contact usually leading to no speedo at all. Another not so likely reason would be a bent pointer that touches the glass or backside. Timing Belt: 1992 21mm 271705-6 20K Miles interval for first 2 changes, made for free by Volvo including change of torsion damper at exhaust? cam, after this 30K Miles interval. 1993 21mm 271705-6 30K Miles interval, first change for free. 1994 24?mm 271856-7 50K Miles interval. 1995- 28mm 271876-5 70K Miles interval. For sure Volvo had problems with the timing belts until 1995 and still for the later models it is recommended to change well within interval considering the consequences of a broken belt. Best regards |

belt n braces
As IHP indicated, it was primarily to allow for extended service intervals. I'm not aware of any premature failures at the time - I'm fairly confident that (with regards to the 960) it was a marketing initiative, rather than an engineering one - the 960 range was reeling over the porous engine block problems, had suffered a fuel tank recall, and its image was getting tarnished - this was a way to underline Volvo's reputation that this was still a reliable car.
Having said that, I've always replaced cambelts way, way, before they're due - and I change it as soon as I buy a new car.
