1993 L Reg Wentworth 940 - HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I have a house in france and have a Volvo estate down there to drive. I am pretty useless with cars and have found that there seems to be something wrong with the gearbox. I took it to the garage and they just havent got a clue how to look at it or what is wrong with it. It is a lovely car and great condition it just doesnt seem to want to get out of 1st gear (it is automatic), has anyone any ideas of where I can take it IN FRANCE or if you know anyone that can look at it without it costing a fortune. My friend said if the gearbox has gone it would not be worth fixing, but I cannot find this out..............HELP.

I suppose if I cant fix it then I can just sell it for scrap if anyone is intersted, I'm at a loss, please can anyone help. I will be in france from 31 March until 15th April and I am in availles limouzine which is near confolens

If not would anyone be interested in it in FRANCE for parts. I am at a loss what to do, I am devastated I cant get it going, it is such a lovely car.

Hi,

May have been better to post this in the 900 series Technical forums..

This garage you have taken the car to, is it a Volvo dealer?
Has the garage checked to see if there are errors in the car electronics?

Have you checked the gearbox oil? or gearbox oil level??

Yep, if its an automatic, the diagnostics system will report a fault code which may help hunt down the problem.

I'd echo CTC's suspicion of low gearbox fluid as the first suspect - and you need to get it sorted asap or else the gearbox will suffer serious damage. If you have run it with low fluid level, then the fluid will probably be burnt, so I'd flush and change the lot if I were you.
