I don't have an argument with having "heavily" modded cars thoroughly tested before being let out on our roads. I have seen plenty of modded death traps in my time. Sticking a humongous motor in a chassis not designed for it, etc. If I modded a car I would be only too happy to have an expert engineer give it the once over, better than killing my self, or worse still, some innocent third party. Just because something comes from Brussels doesn't make it wrong. You may have a point on "re plating"

The test is not so much to make sure the car is well built and strong enough but more so to make sure there is nothing sharp someone might hurt themselves on!

I can see the MOT being used to weed out modified vehicles in time. There are already sections under the RFRs for unsuitably modified which can be fail or advisory.
Also the roller brake test is for Standard vehicles.

At least we still see some pre '60 cars coming in for an MOT at work. A rusty brake pipe or lazy wheel cylinder doesn't magically not happen just because the paint is polished each week and it does 200 miles a year.
There are enough unroadworthy cars round here driving around permanently on foreign plates to pick on rather than focussing on something an enthusiast has spent time and money modifying.
Which is the greater threat?
An Amazon with a Rover V8 or a twenty year old Audi with dodgy brakes and suspension?

Problem is that its so much easier and cheaper (and more likely, profitable) to pick on someone who's trying hard to obey the rules and comply, much like most law enforcement.

Personally, I'm happy to jump through multiple hoops to prove my modified vehicle meets or preferably exceeds the standards laid down for it. What I strongly object to, and will fight to my last breath to prevent, is some jumped up little bureaucrat thinking they have the right to STOP ME MODIFYING OUTRIGHT by any means, direct or backhand.
