My previous diesel of 1.6 made around 6.5-7.5L/100km (31-39 mpg) around town and did some 5L/100km (47mpg) on HW, driving 120-130kmh with occasional run up to 140kmh. XC60 does me 8-10l/100km (23.5-29.5mpg) in city and some 6-7l/100km (36-39mpg) on HW where I drive 125-130 (tempomat). So I'd say difference is not big at all considering the former car was lighter and more aerodynamic (Peugeot 308sw).
That being said, and responding also to someone who keeps talking bad about diesels - I had a similar car performance-wise and size-wise, that was petrol: Grand Cherokee 5.2 V8. Please do tell me how diesels pollute more, considering that Grand's well-tuned engine couldn't consume less than 20l/100km (14mpg) even when being towed.

Diesels in a lot of ways are the best they’ve ever been. I cut my diesel teeth on Leyland trucks in the 80’s. Crack it up on a cold morning and anything down wind disappeared in a plume of smoke. The small diesels were not much better either when they were running right. My V60 D4 runs clean, no soot up the back of the motor, no smoke in a cold morning etc. Round town I’m getting low 30’s and one a run I’m getting mid 40’s but my motor is AWD so those are quite respectable figures for a 5cyl AWD and that’s worked out on the tank to tank figure, not off the trip computer. I reckon Diesels have hit their Zenith now emissions wise unless another Shed Dweller has cooked up a revolutionary design for another type of Diesel engine.
It’s unfair to call people who bought into the diesel dream Sheeple. Our all knowing great and mighty leaders heavily incentivised Diesel engines as the saviour of the planet while pricing Petrol and taxing petrol cars into a minority. As per usual Nobody has really being held accountable for it either while brow beating everyone in to buying either petrol or a hybrid/full electric car which will be a environmental stumbling block for the future. TT

Drinking problem
I'm thinking about my 22MPG average over 2k miles mixed driving with my Volvo (sealed transmission TM). I don't think you're going to get any more efficient ICE engines: I have a 20 year old car averaging 40MPG and a 6 year old car averaging the same- both weight and aerodynamically the same profile.
