Depends really on your budget for buying and how you use a car.The Turbo versions tend to carry a premium over the n/a cars.I have a Phase 1 2.4 n/a which is the lowest powered of the 2.4s at 140bhp.It's no 0-60 sprint champion but it easily holds its own on motorways etc,so I'm happy with it.Gives reasonable economy too[on a 240 mile round trip at mainly 60mph it returned just over 40mpg and is in the mid 20s round the houses]

I agree with 'Dippydog'. My similar spec'd car (an auto) has returned a whisker under 30 MPG over 12K miles. As I only paid just over £500 for the car (a 2000 'V' reg.) from a dealer more than four years ago, there is also minimal depreciation. 'D.D.' is also correct regarding the premium attracted by Turbo cars, plus, of course, you would also have the higher operating costs associated with these variants.
My own car has also proven highly reliable during my ownership, requiring only routine service and the occasional modest repair (e.g. handbrake) for the MOT. There is much more to economical motoring than the cost of fuel. Regards, John.

Do you want manual or automatic? What kind of performance are you hoping to get? What kind of fuel economy are you hoping for? Do you prefer petrol or diesel? What age vehicle are you hoping to get? In your search so far, what examples have caught your eye? Loads of questions but the answers should help us to help you. |

A good early-ish P2 D5 with 5 or 6-speed gearbox and 163bhp (but not the 2.4D) would be a nice choice, but you’d have to choose carefully since good ones are harder to find 16 or 17 years on.
Looking online, there aren’t many, but this one looks tempting. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-det...levance&page=1 £3K will get you an early P3 with the 2-litre Ford/PSA engine, which is a good engine, but not as nice as a D5. Here’s one that looks interesting https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-det...levance&page=1 And one more https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-det...levance&page=1 Time to go and try out a couple of cars to help narrow the field a bit... |

Best of the bunch for what you’re looking for is an early facelift P2 with the earlier euro 3 Diesel engine (as long as you don’t need to drive into pollution controlled zones).
Look for a car around a ‘55’ plate with a D5 engine which has a black cover. This is an example from eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274505916604 Last edited by reggit; Oct 23rd, 2020 at 08:11. |

You beat me to this question. I'm looking at buying a D5, thinking that this would be the best choice for towing a caravan?
