Default c30 cutting out driving me daft

Hi guys i have got a c30 1.6 d r design 2011. car starts first time has a slight missfire but sounds good. it ticks over for approximately 2 mins then cuts out. starts straight away and does exactly same after after 2 mins. nothing showing on either of our ecu readers. tried all the usual clocks working fine its got fuel etc etc etc. has anybody come accross this before ? this car also has had an alternator problem recently, ecu maybe ? thanks in advance kris

Hello

I see you've checked for fault codes. Was that with a generic reader or Vida?

One item that can cause misfire on a stationary and moving car but no codes is the crank position sensor(CPS). Heat from a warming engine often the element that highlights a failing CPS.

Items that can cause a misfire on a car in motion can be ABS sensors and/or the ABS reluctor rings but you should see fault codes relating to this.

I have a Smart Roadster which had misfire and cut out within 5 minutes driving and would not start after. No codes were logged. I pin pointed it to the CPS by rapidly cooling it down and normal service resumed. A new CPS cured it.

Now I'm not an advocate of throwing parts at cars to cure symptoms but usually a non genuine CPS at your local factors is cheap as chips and at least you could eliminate that component then if not successful see if someone on here has Vida local to you and can run a diagnostic check, keeping inline with local Covid restrictions of course

Hello

You could also try unplugging the Mass Air Flow meter (MAF).

Normally you would get a lean mixture fault code but worth a try.

If you unplug it before starting, the ecu will automatically drop to default fuelling values but you would at least see if the fault disappears.

Also it's worth a check for corrosion on injector connections causing resistance, so unplug and clean each , one at a time then start the engine to check if the fault is still there.

Process of elimination I'm afraid and I do think you need either a Volvo dealer/ specialist or member from the forum here to read your car with Vida. There are elements of data the SnapOn reader cannot access.

what is "etc"?

The filter is a very good call but the very fact that you have swapped parts out and are still in the the same boat shows you still need Vida which has specific fault finding tests within it, for such occurrences. It's not just a code reader.

"etc" is an abbreviation of the word "et cetera". An example of this would be, "I replaced my oil filter, fuel filter, air filter etc". So its instead of listing every single item that was replaced, "etc" is used as a way of saying "and so forth".

Although, you may know what "etc" means & you want to know what else the original poster replaced & that's what you mean by "what is "etc?", i.e. what other parts were replaced & weren't listed/what the abbreviated phrase entails exactly. If so, ignore what I've said.

oh i do apologise. the op did say tried all the usual. so etc refers to all the usual things that one would normally try. i dont want to write a huge list of what i have done the gist of the op is that this is an unusual problem that does not seem to be caused by the common problems ie :- filter injector afm maf clocks ETC !
