Default 1992 Volvo 940 GLE - what axle type?

Somehow once again I've managed to wear through my rear brake pads and now they're scratching the discs. Perfect. This is the third car it's happened to in the space of the last six months.

anywho, to get the right brake pads i need to determine the axle type.

I'm under the impression that the GLE of this model has the multi-link leaf spring and nivomat set up. The VIN definitely states that nivomats are fitted and the back end is slightly lowered as if it's been running on leaf springs for the past 28 years. Is there a simple way of confirming this?

I can't see any coil springs looking underneath the rear of the car, so this means multi-link?

Thanks

No 940 uses leaf springs, they are all solid axle, some have nivomats some don't.

Best way to determine it is take the one wheel off. There are two types of pads for the rear, one very small square type and one that looks more like your average brake pad. Every single one I've seen has been the small square type.

If the back end is low, you need new normal springs and new normal dampers to restore the ride height and save you bottoming out on speed humps - that's what my 760 was doing with knackered Nivos!

As for the rear pads, like Luke says the small almost square pads, Ate i think they are off the top of my head. Most places carry them for about a tenner a set.

I do believe that what you need are the square pad with two roll-pin holes for what is often referred to as the Teves system. Brembo part no P86002.

As Dave said, if you have a sagging posterior, chances are your Nivomat self-levelling rear shocks have seen better days. You can either spend a small (although not THAT small) fortune on new Nivos, roll the dice with a secondhand pair or fit standard springs and shocks. Please don't put standard shocks on the car with the current springs...I owned a 940 that had received this treatment from the previous owner (on one side!) and it was an odd driving experience to say the least!

You mean something like this?

Will drop the price to £20 as I could do with them going.

I'm assuming your pads are wearing out due to not being changed rather than some other reason ? Are you doing huge miles in all three cars for this to happen ? I would expect pads to last at least 30k

Might be worth shelling out on Volvo pads at the princely some of £18 to see if they last longer
