So not getting very far but have tested nearly everything and it all seems to be within parameters. Took the throttle body off and give it a good cleaning, same for IAC valve, both dirty but made no difference to my problem. Next up for scrutiny is the TPS.
If this is a potentiometer surely it should provide a varied signal back to the ECU ?? If I put a voltmeter on terminals 1 brown and 2 black at the back of the connector plug I get battery voltage ie 13 volts. If I then connect 1 brown and 3 red/white I get no reading until i turn the throttle quadrant, it immediately goes to battery voltage, no variation or slow increase, closed is 0.00 even slightly open is 13 volts ish. Is this correct ?? And is there a ohms test I can do while I have the throttle body on my bench ?? Or am I barking up the wrong tree.......
Poor cold start seems to be a common problem which people tend to leave and just hope summer turns up quickly...
Many thanks for your help guys.

The TPS is just two microswitches Don, only one of which (the idle one) is used on yours being a turbo. It tells the ECU the throttle is closed so the readings you're getting are correct.
You also have another email with an idea, it may or may not work but won't cost anything to try. Hopefully reveals something useful as well.

Well I have been trying to fix this car for a month now and it has beat me. I am not wasting any more time on it so I will just use it when I have to and hope summer arrives quickly.

Well it defeated me and the car has now been sold thankfully though to a 940 enthusiast who assures me it will have a long and fulfilled life and will not be scrapped. Hey ho, had it nearly 10 years so it is time for a change methinks, Jag maybe, V70 maybe, time will tell

Looks like he will thankfully. I managed to keep it away from the scrap buyers though. Just picked up a lovely V50 which I intend to enjoy to the full.
Regards and thanks again, Don.
