For what it costs in fuel it more than makes up for it in being low maintenance, reliable and ease of maintenance.

If that's 26 miles total then it's about 18-22mpg, if it's 26 miles each way then it's 36-44mpg.

recalculated that tank - knocked off 77 miles - ended up at 32.9 mpg

360beast i cant reply to your pm as your inbox is full! Re headlining will have to take a rain check on that as we have baby due any day. Will let you know if i have time to make the trip in a month or so. Thanks for your invite.

Further to my previous post re handbrake shoes. I've completed the fitting with the new shoes and they work great. 100% holds the wagon good. Nice and tight with the a frame repair kit too.

Have also fitted a new crank sensor, the wire was on the way out on the other one upon removal. But after i put the new one in, the next morning had the same no start. But cycling the key a few times then starting seems to work.

Speedo repair soon. I wonder is it possible to amend the mileage whilst its in bits to add the 2000 ish miles I've done with no speedo...

Your CPS was certainly dodgy but if you had to cycle the ingition key a few times, it points to a lazy starter switch as Volvo call it. Located on the back of the steering lock barrel, it's two screws and a multiplug to remove, once you've removed the surrounding trim.

Check the part number on it before searching for a replacement, there's about 3 or 4 different ones fitted to the 7/9xx range as a whole plus 2 or 3 more fitted exclusively to certain 7xx OR 9xx models but noth both.

NONE are interchangeable so won't even go on to the steering lock, the plug won't fit and they won't function correctly even if you could overcome the first two problems!

I have a spare 940 starter switch, i'd need to find it to check the part number but you need to know yours first as there's no point me looking until i know if it's going to match.

Digging up my old thread here.
Finally got around to removing and dismantling the speedo unit for a repair attempt.
As per the well established guide, my capacitors had oozed all their guts out their bottoms and had leaked onto surrounding components and the two big chips.
This evening I will solder the new capacitors on and reassemble.
I did not notice any dry joints on the rear of the main dash assembly.
Hopefully my repair is good.

Have you got a link to the capacitors you bought? I suspect I may be needing to get some, how many does the speedometer in a 1991 940 need?

I have attached a screen shot of what I ordered.
5 capacitors in total. I also ordered some deoxit spray separately.
I can confirm the speedo is now working! For now...
But appears to be functioning normally and accurate as must have put the needle on in the right place.

If you are proficient at soldering its not too bad. The ribbon cable is the one to watch as it is fragile. Its just a case of being very careful. The circuit board itself is also very old so be careful not to lift any pads or balls any of the thru holes. And ensure the capacitors are soldered on both sides of the board.
I buzzed the capacitors from their legs to the next component along the track with a multimeter to check continutiy.
I would not reccomend as a first soldering job.
The most care has to be given to dismantling the thing and being careful with the needle and bits once everything is laid across your desk.
Thanks to the writer of the article, must have been headache working out the problem!

With a now working speedo, my MAF appears to have died.
Experiencing poor starting, lack of power when trying to accelerate, random stalling when driving. However idle is ok.
A code 121 is being thrown by the blinky light.
Ideally it would be nice to borrow someone's maf for a quick drive to see if it solves my problem! Or ideally purchase a good used bosch maf as new they appear to be £400+
