Default d24 tic- Strange coolant behaviour, please don't say its HG

Well i have been using the 940 for a few days now and love it apart from the poor performance. There is a real worry issue i need to ask about though.

I have noticed it is not returning coolant back to the expansion bottle . It holds temp fine but i see no return at all weirdly and ive even felt the water in the bottle and its been cold after a run. It also had no pressure in the coolant system at all it seemed

After fitting a new header tank the only difference i have noticed is the system seems to have some pressure and the lid hissed ever so slightly after shut off today. It had a grey cap and i have fitted a green cap that is the same kpa rating.

I will check it again but it was not throwing huge piles out, there was a audible little hiss when the engine was off.

Is there any tests etc to see whats up? It holds temp fine so clearly the water pump is running and has done 80k total. Im so confused about this and worried at the same time.i bet the head is a big job.

Does it look like ive sold my v70 and life has kicked me well and truly in the nuts and given me another issue? My luck has been appalling recently with cars

Mick

It warms up quickly so surely the stat is not a issue? I may well change it anyway.

After a read i am leaning towards a reduced operation water pump, impeller gone or spinning etc.Its what a local specialist suggested on the vw engines.

As long as its not a serious issue like HG i will be happy and tear free haha

In cooler weather, especially when close to 0 deg c, mine (d24t) takes 5+ miles of town driving before the gauge is fully upright...

I have replaced the thermostat and coolant sender and it seems to just be normal behaviour for it.

I can't say I've ever removed the cap or checked for pressure with it running though

my 940 diesel behaves bit like yours . . take it there is no sign of coolant at engine oil cap no mayonnaise there are you loosing any amount of coolant mine uses a little bit now and then takes months not weeks to need a top up mine hisses too when ive been on a run . i get a tiny bit of coolant at coolant filler cap .
ask the question at D24.com those guys are the best to be honest on this engine
there are a few guys over here too check out YOU TUBE videos too .

ThankYou for the help everyone

I had another look tonight whilst servicing her and hopefully after a nip the cap is not hissing so all is well. The top hose is hot, bottom cold so despite the reduced flow it seems ok. I will change the water pump with the belts to be safe.

The car got fully synth ester gulf racing oil this evening and a good filter and diesel filter . I added a smidgen of diesel cleaner to the filter and rest in the tank.

The car drove noticeably smoother and better, i maybe even heard a turbo hiss on a hill. Hopefully it is freeing up again

As pricey as this oil is i may well change it again sooner and use it as a flush.

Hi

Our car is a 1996 but the engine is 1995 as per the sticker on the cam belt cover. I will check and see what tensioner it has tomorrow. I had already read metal tensioners were the best options too at change.

I suspect its a later model

I will be keeping a really close eye on this engine to see how it behaves.

Really good information ThankYou
