Question Will a 760 88+ IRS rear sub-frame fit in a 86 740

I'm in the middle of my restoration on my 88 760 and the rust is quite bad,
iv'e seen a pristine 86 740 and was thinking of swapping everything over from
the 760 to the 740, including, engine, transmission, rear axle,
dash board (if it will go in), interior loom etc...

Does anybody know for sure if the rear axle will go in,

on the 760 rear end it does look like its the same as the early model,
only they have added attachments for the rear trailing arms, but i could be
wrong as i haven't seen underneath the early model

Any photos of the rust?

I think there are adaptor plates of some sort that Volvo used to mount the IRS/convert them to IRS so it may be possible.

Something you will have to tell your insurers is your "760 Turbo" is actually based on an older 740, first they will likely demand an engineers report and even then will load your premium accordingly like 3-4 times what you'd be paying on your standard 1988 760 Turbo.

A few years back i was in possession of a car 5 years newer than another i owned and in generally better condition. The engine was blown in the newer shell (different engine, that's why) so i enquired about swapping all the running gear (inc engine, gearbox, brakes, suspension etc), seats, carpets etc into this younger shell.

I was told i would have modified the original car and as such, despite using exactly the same components, the car would then be considered modified and would cost me in excess of £1000 to insure, in fact almost £1000 more than i was paying at the time which was £134 a year.

Before you make any decisions, i'd strongly suggest you consult your insurers and sound them out on what your premium would do if you followed this course of action.

The other thing to consider is that neither car would be original so would lose a lot of its potential value, also it wouldn't be eligible for Historic road tax (free) at 40 years old due to the lack of originality.
